The Hoya 72mm Neutral Density (NDX8) 0.9 Filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance.

Multi-coated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting.

Neutral Density filters have four main uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Neutral Density Factors

2x = ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2)
4x = ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO 1/4)
8x = ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)
As one of the premier filter manufacturers, Hoya filters continue to made from quality glass assuring the photographer clear, sharp and accurate images
Hoya filters consistently provide even color all the way through the filter; All surfaces are ground and polished to specific thickness and tolerances

            Comments about Hoya 72mm Neutral Density (NDX8) 0.9 Filter:

            The ND is primarily used to decrease the depth of field when taking portraits, but in general, anytime I want to open up the lens or use a slower shutter speed.

            I really like the fact that it is color neutral...it doesn't appear to affect color content at all.

                    I used this ND filter for my school project using multiple lighting on a 5D with a 28-135mm lens. The images came out beautifully! It is good quality and easy to keep clean. There are filters that are better quality, but cost substantially more. It is a great value!

                    Comments about Hoya 72mm Neutral Density (NDX8) 0.9 Filter:

                    I use this so I can shoot at bright daylight but at lower a wider F-Stop opening or slower shutter speed so I can sync with flash. Does its job.

                    I use a Sekonic L358 Meter for metering. To get the correct ambient reading or flash meter reading with the filter attached on my lens, I set the L358 to compensate by -3.0 (press both ISO buttons and turn wheel to make adjustment). I initially just tried to do the calculations in my head, but it was slowing me down when having to do readings for ambient and flash.

                    I gave it four Stars only because it is almost half the price of a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens. Generally speaking, I don't know why filters are so expensive.

                                Comments about Hoya 72mm Neutral Density (NDX8) 0.9 Filter:

                                After reading lots of reviews I settled on this ND filter as being the best value for money, and it is. It is well made and slim enough to not show vignetting on my Nikkor 18-200 mm lens at the widest angle, and it reduces light entering the lens by 3 stops.

                                To obtain creamy waterfall shots in summer daylight, a 3-stop reduction still isn't enough though even at f/22 & ISO 100 + coupled with a polarizer, so just be aware of that. I probably should have bought a 6-stop ND filter but can't afford one for the amount of use it would get in my amateur hands.

                                    How much can you say about a neutral density filter. Quality seems good, and it does what I need. I bought 72 mm, but should have gone with 77 to use with my new lens. Oh well, hind sight. I bought a bunch of adapter rings to use the filter with all of my smaller lenses.

                                        Comments about Hoya 72mm Neutral Density (NDX8) 0.9 Filter:

                                        I rated this 5 stars, because even though similar filters exist which are 2 to 3 times the price of this one, I believe that noticeable improvement over this one would be marginal at best.

                                        How much can you say about one of these things anyway? I was pleased. It was glass, it felt sturdy, there wasn't any color cast, there was no significant loss of sharpness. I was disappointed when I left it on the hood of my car and took off down the highway. Someday, I'll buy another.

                                          This filter is essential when shooting with fast primes in daylight. The Hoya HMC model does a really good job....no loss of color balance.
