The Cullmann Magic 2 is amongst the world's most compact full height tripods, and most importantly it folds totally flat for easy storage in a briefcase or other travelling bag.  Made of lightweight anodized aluminum, the Magic 2 has the capability to convert to a monopod by removing one of the legs and the center column. By removing the ballhead, the legs fold to amazingly-small package of just 13.4 x 5.1 x 1.8" (34 x 13 x 4.5 cm) WxHxD dimensions.

Because of its unique design, conventional tripod cases aren't well suited to the Cullmann Magic 2.  The two options recommended here have been thorougly inspected to work well, with the computer-style case requiring you to detach the ballhead.

I have used this tripod for over a dozen caving expeditions with great success. It is VERY compact and can easily fit in a cave pack with no problem. It is lightweight and that makes a big difference when you are hauling photo gear through a wet, muddy cave. I have completely submerged it in water, and when I get back from my trips, it is usually caked in mud. No problem, since it is easy to almost completely disassemble and clean. I only recently replaced it when I dropped my previous one down a 140' deep pit and it pretty much shattered into a million pieces. The only problem I have encountered is that, because it so light, you might have trouble setting it up in a flowing stream, which tends to knock it over. Of course, you could just attach a heavy weight to it to alleviate this problem. All around good tripod.

If folding flat for easy stowage in a bag is your main concern, this is a great tripod. I bought this tripod for use on a month long trip where efficient packing was a must. It worked great because of its pack-ability.

It was not as light as I would hope. The ball head adds a bunch of weight. If you are worried about weight, you can remove it and use a hard landscape mount with no ability to adjust for uneven surfaces except to adjust the legs.

At full height, it is subject to some movement due to the spindly nature of the single vertical used to achieve full height. In wind you will get lots of shake...

One further advantage... One leg unscrews and becomes a monopod. This is great because the legs are heavy enough to make a good club in a pinch.

Comments about Cullmann 2722 Magic 2 Tripod:

One of the tripod supports crumpled the second time I pulled it out of my bag to use it. I was at the beginning of my 6 month trip and I found myself with out a tripod.. 2 weeks into it. BS.. I am careful with my gear BTW.. But even ifI was rough on it, this is a crucial support area.. so it shouldn't be breaking here. So whatever.. I roll with it. I e-mail the support department seeing what they can do for me (Cullmann's - not B&H)After a few weeks they agree to send me a part so I can fix it myself. They can only send it to my USA adress.. thanks guys.. now I have to tote a broken tripod with me for 5 more months. awesome. I get home.. cant fix it with the part they sent me. So I call the NY branch and guess what? You need a special tool to fix it so I have to send it to them now.. Why did they say I could fix it by myself? Not very good customer service from these guys. Pretty annoyed right now. Dont bother with this tripod.. Its not very sturdy and their CS is not that good- unless your ready to pay to ship the sucker directly to them.

Comments about Cullmann 2722 Magic 2 Tripod:

I have bought a lot of tripods through the years. But the biggest problem is traveling with one. Good tripods still take up a lot of room in the suitcase, no matter how light they are. But the Cullmann Magic 2 Tripod is unique in folding into a short flat shape that can fit in any suitcase and can fit INSIDE many backpacks. This is what I carry whenever I travel - meaning whenever I go outside the house - leaving the more cumbersome tripods at home. It is fabulous for this purpose. It's great to carry when backpacking - it will fit inside the backpack. The tripod head it comes with isn't great. But it can be removed and replaced with the head of your choice.

Have used couple tripods before purchasing this one. Main point to get one , was option of flat fold, which is so good once you do lots of traveling. Was surprised on how versatile this tripod is. You can convert it to monopod in seconds and all parts fits just perfect. I think that German manufactures once again showed their quality and innovative design. In the box you will find a manual who shows you in details on how to adjust your tripod from portrait to macro shooting. Instructions in 5 languages. Stability on full extend could be questioned by Pros, but it perfectly suites my needs as enthusiast.

This tripod will fit in my motorbike, and having a monopod ability, it's great for long trips. Sturdy and well built, it would be nice to have a level built in, otherwise, a great product from Cullmann.

Comments about Cullmann 2722 Magic 2 Tripod:

I have owned the Magic 2 for a couple years now and it pairs up very nicely with the LowePro 202 AW sling bag (you rip out the stitches on the main retaining strap on the side to make it wider and the 3 legs of the Magic 2 slip right in and then into the tripod pouch.) But even more of a surprise is that the Cullmann chest monopod chest base screws right into the center column of the Magic. So in one rig you have a tripod, monopod and chest monopod. And it all form fits on to the LowePro 202AW sling bag. The Cullman Magic 2/Monopod/Chest monopod easily handle an older Canon XTi gripped with a Tammy 18-270VC/28-300VC and 580EXII. Nice walk around setup ready for any composition. An extra Canon 430EX and you have a two flash strobist setup with the 430 slaved on the tripod with the camera and 580 master on the monopod or chest monopod or hand held. This stuff plus stacked filters with metal caps all fit easily in the LowePro sling bag. The Magic 2/monopod/chest monopod base slips on to the side tripod attachments/pouch.
Everything is accessible *without* taking the bag off.

Out of the box I was afraid it would not fit in the tripod holder of my backpack camera bag, but it does. It is nice and flat but a little larger than I imagined from the pictures. It is easy to set up and relatively lite. I leave for Alaska next week which is why I bought this tripod. My old Manfrotto is a great tripod but just not designed for backpacking, at six pounds and big. We will see how this one works.

Thus far only for extreme close-ups. For a ball head that is quite small, it holds my slide rail and camera with the Nikkor 105 mm 1:2.lens attached at 45 degree+ angles. Time will tell about the ball head's durability.

The ease of leg adjustments and the way this wonderfully light weight tripod folds flat is a great innovation by this company.

Comments about Cullmann 2722 Magic 2 Tripod:

I bought this Tripod specifically to use while traveling. The small and compact size was the selling point, but the clincher for keeping it is the ease of use in setting up and taking down. While not a heavy tripod by any means, it was very stable in the environments I was using it in. The larger leg is a great place to hang a bag or weight to give it added stability, but this isn't a flimsy tripod by any means. I will carry the Cullmann tripod with me all the time now as an emergency/travel option and only take my larger tripod when I KNOW I need one.

I bought this tripod to take on hiking trips so that it could fit in my backpack and it does that excellently. The ball head is nice, it feels very durable, and I love the detachable monopod. However, there are 2 main things that arent great about this tripod. One is that it isnt extremely sturdy when extended very high with my D90. I would definitely recommend using a remote shutter release with this tripod. Second, and probably the worst thing about it in my opinion, is the quick disconnecting piece that secures to the camera. It is basically impossible to get this thing tight even with the locking pin. Other than those 2 things its a decent tripod.

I use this tripod strictly for cave photography, where small storage size is a major plus. It collapses flat, fits easily inside a cave pack, won't snag on anything while it's in there, and weighs next to nothing. Mine is covered completely in mud and dust after each trip and cleans easily. The shaft diameter of the center column fits 3/4" schedule 40 PVC pipe fittings perfectly, and the PVC pipe will then lock down in the tripod as well,so using a height extension of PVC pipe works perfectly. Had mine for 3+ years with over 40 caving photo trips. The mini-magic (I have 3 of these) works just as well for holding slaved flashes.

I've had this Magic 2 for some 15 years and it is the most convenient tripod to carry around and it carries modern slrs on its ball head without probs.

I love the way it folds into a flat package and one leg dismantled to produce a tall monopod.

For really serious work I use my Manfrotto but for everyday and travel, I choose my Cullmann Magic 2.
