The Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens is a compact and lightweight standard zoom lens that offers superior optical performance, plus a built-in Image Stabilizer. The IS system reduces the possibility of blurred photographs caused by camera shake, which allows for handheld photography in comparatively dim light without a flash or tripod. At the wideangle end of the zoom range, the equivalent shutter speed gain is approximately 1.5 stops while at the telephoto end, it is approximately 2 stops.
In addition, the lens has a USM drive mechanism for faster and quieter AF operation, and the pulse control diaphragm (EMD) ensures precise aperture control.

First, I am *not* a technical user, however, I am a tough customer. I take photos almost entirely of horses and horse people in their natural environments: trails, arenas, pastures, dressage courts, etc. Further, I take my camera with me on my horse. The places we go tend to be dry and dusty, or wet and muddy, and in getting there, my equipment is jostled and banged around. This lens is the one I always take along because of its versatility, and it's stood up to the abuse superbly.
Although I'm not qualified to comment on the technical aspects of the lens, I've had photos of running horses enlarged to poster size (well, 22" in the largest dimension) satisfactorily, which speaks well of both the innate lens quality and the performance of the image stabilization software.
This lens is a replacement: my camera fell from about 15 feet and landed directly on the lens - and I didn't hesitate for a moment to replace it with exactly the same thing.

i use this as a general purpose lens

the range for this lens as an everyday work horse is near perfect but there are some caveats
i use this as a general purpose lens
in fact i own 2 of these
the range for this lens as an everyday work horse is near perfect but there are some caveats
compared to some other lenses this doesn't seem as sharp, the lens creep becomes an issue after a few weeks esp if you carry the rig by a neck strap (lens down).
the autofocus seems very fast and accurate not to mention quiet
the IS performs without a flaw as near as i can tell
i haven't seen a chromatic issues either
1 last minor hiccup you will want a hood for this lens i have caught some nifty (nasty) flares
please canon do something about the lens wobble though i hate that i've sent it in twice for repairs.
the lens wobble is caused by the end element's internal seal wearing out, this may also introduce dust elements or other debris into the lens

This lens I purchased for the main reason of shooting events at my children's school! And I love it! When I'm not doing sessions, this lens is usually the one found on my camera! Great everyday lens, never have a problem focusing, very quick. Pure love!

This lens, with IS, is a macro zoom. Its close focus specs. are .5 m/1.6 ft. The same close focus specs. as the Canon fixed 100mm macro. Gives me a very good macro lens, with the addition of a good zoom range. This lens also has the red infrared focus marks, which most newer lenses no not.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens:
The lens is light and affordable but one thing that I really didn't like was that dust was getting into the lens. When you zoom in and out I guess it wasn't sealed properly and dust started to get in.

family pictures and landscapes are the areas i put this lens to good use, though i realise it is capable of a lot more. fast focus outdoors, however, struggles under the artificial lighting indoors.
is it just my lens or is the zoom ring really that stiff and jerky (compared to the macro ring that simply glides). would welcome comments/experiences of others on this.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens:
This lens delivered the goods just as I expected from Canons EF lenses. The construction is good enough for everyday use but would probably not hold up to well if banged around. The quality is also in line with the EF series. As with most EF lenses you know what to expect and don't get any surprises (good or bad). The lens creep did start fairly quickly, but is expected with most zooms that do not have a lock. Overall this is a great everyday lens with very good quality.

A friend turned me on to this lens, says she never takes it off of her Canon. She's right, it's a keeper for sure. Arrived on time in excellent condition. Hope to do business with B & H again.

I like this lens, it does what I wanted it for.
I'm somewhat new to the business of photography, and I'm trying to just expand my collection of equipment, this was an upgrade from another lens that I had (it was very standard).
The autofocus is good on this lens, and it's a great for general use.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens:
Have to use this lens with caution. It does not produce results like the "L" series lenses. It has a wonderful range of focal lenths, but it is a little bit of a compromise if you want sharp, sharp images. Great running around lens, but if you are serious about photography, and image quality. Look to spend a bit more money.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens:
I am quite satisfied with the Canon EF 28-135. It's a good lens. It's relatively light, which I was looking for, does what it should do, and, although I would have preferred 24 or even lower, the lack of range at the lower end is not a limiting factor as I had feared, nor is the 3.5. What I was trying to achieve in buying this lens was something fast, light, and versatile in range. But apparently this is not really possible. I have a Canon 24-105 1:4, which is a very good lens, but too slow, it's also a bit heavy. I also have a Canon 24-70 1:2.8, which is also a good lens, it's fast enough, but the range is limited, and it's heavy (over 2 lbs). And I also have a Canon EF 16-35, 2.8 which is great for close ups and wide angle, and is fast, but it has it's limitations in many situations. For their different purposes these lenses are fine, even great, but lugging them around and changing them is a pain. The 28-135 is reasonably fast, has a reasonable range, and is, above all, light enough to carry around and covers a wide range of needs, especially for landscapes. It's also a lot cheaper than any of the other lenses. For all of these reasons I would recommend it as a starter lens, or for lugging around if you don't have a truck. But other photographers won't say WOW when they see you using it.

Comments about Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens:
This lens has exactly the right zoom range for day-to-day use. I use it for everything from low-light indoor work to shooting roller derby, where the USM motor is a major boon. The image quality is definitely a step up from the EF-S series, and very close to what you can get from an L lens. Basically, this glass is a near-perfect all-arounder in terms of zoom level, cost, and performance. It's quick, high quality, and pretty wide.
The only drawback is that it's susceptible to chromatic aberrations at lower zoom levels. Probably more so than with the equivalent L-series, but definitely less than the equivalent EF-S. Nevertheless, if I can only carry one lens, this is it.

General purpose lens for my Canon EOS 5d Mk 2
Good general purpose lens. Annoying that it doesn't have a lens lock to keep it from extending when carrying it around.

It is a good beginner kit lens for full frame Canons. There is a lot of lens breathing, as to be expected with cheaper zoom lenses. Good for run-and-gun shooting.

I call this my do it all (almost all) lens. Great DOF, fast (USM) acurate and a great range. I didn't want the kit 18-55mm becuase I have felt the restrictions that go with that kind of range, but the 28-135mm is great. I do miss the wide angle of a 18-55mm but would gladly exchange that for this AWESOME piece of glass.

This lens works very well . For the price and focal range with IS this lens should be in everyone collection. I have not had any lens creep walking around yet.
