Comments about RedWing Compact Boom Assembly:

This is a great boom. It has nice balance. I found it easy to work with. I have been fairly happy. It does have its drawbacks. I found, if I wanted to use a soft box of any size I had to use an extension. The compact boom is just not that big. I also found it needs a really serious light stand something like a Matthews or Avenger. Even with a good light stand the weight of soft box and an extension put stress on the joint between the boom and the stand tipping it a degree or so. This interferes with the elegance of its design. Having to make multiple unwanted adjustments to pitch and angle every time you lower and raise the boom. Hug! If the vertical part of the boom stays level you never have to readjust a thing. The boom will keep the same angles just lower and raise to your delight. In practice this is hardly the case. Finally, it would be nice if the boom had a clamp to lock it into place. I have found that when when working with really expensive irreplaceable objects the lack of a clamp can make clients and museum people really nervous.

Comments about RedWing Compact Boom Assembly:

This is a great boom and fair priced for the value.

You will have to provide your own lead shot for counterweight bag. I used scuba lead shot weight bags and in this area it is around 4 bucks a pound.

So, plan on another $40 to $50 for weight. You will have to modify the saddle bag provided to insert the weight bags or cut them open a pour in the slits provided.
