Comments about Lowepro Lens Case 5 - for 300mm or 400mm Lens (Black):
I use this in place of the case for my old manual focus Nikon 400mm f/3.5. Read the description carefully. It fits the old 400 3.5 perfectly.
I have a few of these cases for lenses, and they have completely replaced the original lens cases and bags. They are snug and well built.
This one comes with a sturdy rear attachment point, if someone would want to attach it that way. It's as long as my thigh, so I don't see myself actually attaching it to a belt or pack like that (perhaps the side of a horse or llama for wilderness packing?). It also has two cinch straps horizontally around the case to secure it. It has a decent shoulder strap that attaches by D-rings. It's removable, but not easily (it doesn't have clips). It also has a short strap for a handle across the back of the top. It's strong but stays out of the way.
I don't own a 300mm f/2.8, so I can't vouch for the fit, but it fits a 400mm f/3.5 like it was made for it. It seems like it's a little long for the Canon 400 f/4, but I'm not a Canon shooter, so you'll want to ask someone else.

While this item appears well made and could handle a 300mm lens its not for the 400mm as manuf. suggests.

Comments about Lowepro Lens Case 5 - for 300mm or 400mm Lens (Black):
I purchased this with the Canon 300 2.8 in order to have a more easily handleable case than the supplied hardshell trunk. I then noticed that it was very hard to get the lens with the hood attached in and out. The reason is a black rubberized ring on the lens hood that makes for a lot of friction when putting the lens in and out. I put some electrician's tape on the rubberized ring and now it works like a charm.
On the case itself: Like all LowePro cases, it's very well built, plus this one is much more lightweight and compact than the original Canon one. I would wish though the carrying strap was a bit more wide / better padded, as the case with the lens in it is fairly heavy.
