Having recently upgraded to an Epson 3880 from an HP printer whose max paper size was 8.5 X 11, I suddenly found myself surrounded by a wonderful new world of paper choices and sizes. I also discovered a great sale was on (maybe still is) for 25 sheets of 17 X 22 Epson Exhibition Fiber paper.Knowing that I wouldn't always print at 17 X 22 but smaller sizes as well, I quickly computed that the cost of buying large 17 X 22 sheets to cut up would provide more paper per square inch than the smaller packages Epson offered. This meant I needed a good, inexpensive trimmer to use for cutting up these large sheets into whatever size my heart (and budget - ink costs money) desired. The Dahle 508 18" cutter fits the bill perfectly. It's much sharper than my Carl trimmer and goes through thicker paper really well. The Carl always leaves tiny bits of edge here and there - the edges don't look good. The Dahle is like a razor blade and the edges are unfrayed and professional-looking.Some of the other reviewers said lining up paper against the cutter's edge may provide a crooked cut. I found my cutter's OK at one end (that is, perfectly perpendicular to the cutting blade's travel), but not the other end. So, if I'm trimming something big and important, I either push the paper firmly against the edge of the "good" end, or simply use a tape measure to ensure the cut will come out straight. I've owned several cutters in the under $100 range - none of them cut perfectly straight, so get over it. (Like with carpentry, measure twice, cut once.) This is a great cutter for the money.

The one I ordered is not square! It was quite obvious from the first cut. Another consideration is that the aluminum roller guide is not stiff enough to cut more than one sheet without the potential for a curved cut. Maybe this one was defective, because I read many positive reviews about this roller. However, I cannot recommend it based on my experience with it. If you are not after precision 90-degree angle cuts or perfectly straight edges, this may be just what you need.
Moreover, I bought this product thinking that, because it can accommodate 18-inch-wide paper, I could accurately measure 8x10 photos. NOT SO! The width ruler only goes to 6 3/8 inches! While this could be easily surmised by reading the dimensions, it isn't clearly stated what the maximum width measurement is.

This trimmer is great for photographers and scrap bookers. The trimming table has the lines to guide your cuts and to create intricate angled shapes. In addition, the self-sharpening blade eliminates rough cuts and keeps the trimmed edges clean and sharp. This trimmer being 18", makes trimming and cropping an image easy, the large size of the cutting area allows you to cut once, eliminating the need to make multiple cuts to achieve the desired size. The trimmer is sturdy and reasonably priced, and will surely meet my needs for a long time.

This is a great tool for all photographers who need to trim their photos whether they print them at home or send them out to be printed elsewhere. Love this trimmer. Very good price as well.

Pretty darn good a for trimming photographs as the Dahle leaves a nice clean edge. One detraction is the plastic guides are not square to the cutter head which can be a real pain if you are not carefull.

Not good for a heavy load of chopping. Maybe good for scrapbooking.. but not good for a heavy photo work load.

It would be better if the table was 12" wide rather than 6". Hard to cut paper larger than 14" wide. I don't see how you can cut 17x22 paper done to 8.5x11.

Trimmer works fine, however there is a discrepancy with the printed guide lines compared to the left margin. It is not a perfect right angle.

I used this to cut a few hundered photos ranging from wallet to 11x14 and I really like this. The only warning I have is this: don't trust the sides to cut square. In other words, when you put the paper to the side, make sure it is square to the cutter. Sometimes I went by feel and not by sight to ensure squareness and the results weren't always square. Other than that, it works great!

I highly recommend this trimmer. I had purchased another less expensive trimmer from [...]and was very disapointed. Blade wore down quickly and the sidewalls were not really square. The Dahle trimmer is fantastic. Self-sharpening blade cuts sharp and true. The unit is very well made and best of all it is square. I have found no shortcomings with my new Dahle trimmer.

I use to trim the photos I print, and as a personal device, it works quite well. It does take a bit of experience to get the cut exactly where desired, but I have no complaints. It is rather light-weight which might rule out high-volume usage.

Comments about Dahle 508 Personal Rolling Trimmer (18"):
I primarily use this trimmer to cut down pictures to their correct size. It does a wonderful job making the edges smooth and cuts across very easily. However, the one side of the trimmer is not lined up properly and therefore will make the cut go at an angle. I am able to use the other side which works fine. I probably should have sent it back to get another one since I wasn't completely satisfied.

I trim inkjet prints for matting/framing. Photography is an avocation, not a vocation. This trimmer is perfect for my purposes. Were I trimming hundreds of prints a week, it wouldn't be adequate, but a trimmer that would be, would cost far more.
The base is plastic, but again, for the price I wasn't looking for stainless steel.
