The SE162 Red Square is a single channel instrument direct box/impedance-matching device with a sonic exciter built-in. The unit works as any direct box with a 1/4" input and XLR and 1/4" output, but it features a switchable sonic exciter with a "Bottom" control for adjusting the "punch" and "Definition" control which adjusts the clarity and presence of the signal.
