The Nikon SU-4 Wireless TTL Slave Flash Controller enables wireless remote TTL slave flash with any current Nikon Speedlight. The SU-4 detects the firing of the master flash (including built-in pop-up flash) on a Nikon film SLR camera, and sends a firing start signal to the slaved unit. The SU-4 stops the firing of the slaved flash by detecting the firing stop of the master flash. Use of SU-4's eliminates connecting cords. Operates up to approximately 23' from the location of the main flash.

Note! This unit is not compatible with digital SLR cameras.

While I love Nikon's CLS, there are times when pre-flashes drive me crazy. Portrait photography is one of those times because many people blink or lose an expression while the so-called "imperceptable" pre-flashes are firing.
SU-4 to the rescue! In manual mode it fires instantaneously. In TTL mode, however, you still get the pre-flashes. This leads me to the next point- it IS absolutely compatable with digital SLRs- even in the TTL mode. I use it with SB 600's and 800's - it is great!
I definitely use it more often in the manual mode- even inside a halo it slaves well.

I use this with my Nikon D5000 and SB 600 speed light. It is working very well and is simple to use and mount. I did not want to spend a lot on a wireless remote trigger and I am very pleased.

Comments about Nikon SU-4 Wireless Remote Slave TTL Flash Controller (with SG-2 Diffuser):

My Nikon D-700 digital camera has a wireless flash feature that enables firing my Nikon SB-800X flash from a distance. However, with the SU-4 I can also fire my older Nikon SB-24 flash, that mates with my older film camera, for multi-flash photos. Both flashes work well together and the SU-4 makes older flash units useful.

Well made and it triggers the SB-600 every time were other triggers would not. A bit pricey, but it works - have triggered a flash in that was in a closet with louvered doors. Comes with the pop up flash shield and carrying bag.

A friend triggers his Alien Bee with the pocket wizard and uses one of these to trigger his SB-600.

Very easy to setup and use with remote flash units, I used these controllers with a D1x, sb800 and two sb600. The D1x does not have the Nikon CLS so you need some type of controller to make the remote flash units fire. These work excellent so far.

I am a professional photographer and have used this slave with a Metz 45 in all kinds of situations, from portrait to interior and even remote landscape at night (artistic projects). As long as you make sure the sensor is pointing to the main flash (and can't pick up the flash it is controlling) it works flawlessly as a basic trigger or when TTL controled. And it is the only slave control I have found that TTL triggers off the main camera flash. The 'beep' feedback is also great, makes using camera-mount based flashes in a 'studio' setup on location as convenient as a power pack system without the bulk and cords.

Use with Metz 45 and SCA 343 hot shoe connector.
