Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Canon EW-60 II Lens Hood:
I purchased this as a replacement to my lost lens hood that over time had become very loose. The updated version has a much tighter bayonette so I no longer need to worry about it falling off.
As a side note, B&H photo gets high marks for shipping the package ahead of schedule.

Comments about Canon EW-60 II Lens Hood:
One star off for cost.
That said, Canon hoods are *much* better than 3rd party designs as they have light-absorbing flocking on the interior. Third party hoods are often shiny(!) plastic which defeats the purpose.
Attaches backwards on lens for traveling.
Canon should include a hood with their lenses.

Comments about Canon EW-60 II Lens Hood:
I would recommend the genuine canon lens hood as I feel the quality is better. This lens hood attaches easily but stays on securely while I am shooting. The hood has a velvet texture on the interior side of it to stop reflections and give better flair protection. Glad I bought the geniune canon lens hood.

Comments about Canon EW-60 II Lens Hood:
You're going to eventually need the hood for every lens you've got and Canon sure isn't going to treat you to it... Only 4 Stars because it isn't 'free' and/or included with the lens.

i use this lens hood on my 24mm prime. helps to reduce some lens flare but is not necessarily a cure all.
