Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

This is something you simply must buy if you se the 28mm or 35mm.
It will greatly improve the contrast of your images, and does a great job of protecting the lens, to boot. It's also nice and compact - it does not take up too much more room in the bag.
You won't regret buying this one!

I wanted to like this hood. I really did. However, it is finicky about mounting properly, tends to wiggle once it's on, and is too-easily knocked loose from the lens. In theory there's nothing wrong with it, but in practice it becomes an annoyance far too often. As an alternative, I recommend the Nikon NH-3, which will easily screw into the lens' 52mm filter threads.

This works as expect but should be included along with the lens... come on Canon.

Comments about Canon EW-65 II Lens Hood:
As a lens hood, it works perfectly. It is a little picky when taking on and off. I use it with a 35mm f2, which means you cannot remove the lens from the body with the hood in the prone position.

Comments about Canon EW-65 II Lens Hood:
It works as it should, but could be designed better. My two issues are that (1) it doesn't lock in as easily as it could, and (2) you can't remove the lens with the hood in the prone position.

Comments about Canon EW-65 II Lens Hood:
This hood is discrete. Works great. I would give it 5 stars if it screwed into the lens threads instead of clipping on. That's my only gripe about the design as it might become insecure if I'm not careful. Regardless, it's a great and necessary buy!

Comments about Canon EW-65 II Lens Hood:
i found this hood much better than its off-brand competitors. it is discrete, and has cut down on the already low glare in the 35mm f/2.0. in addition, the buttons on either side provide for a much easier on/off that doesn't make me feel like i am grinding the lens or the hood.

This was purchased for my EF 35 f/e and does the job if not economically.

Comments about Canon EW-65 II Lens Hood:
As far as lens hoods go, it works well. The problem is that it wobbles considerably while it's on the lens. There's really no other alternative for the older primes though.
