Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Canon EW-73II Lens Hood for EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 Lens:
This lens hood does exactly what its supposed to do. It protects your lens and reduces unwanted strays of light entering your lens, thus reducing flare. My only gripe about this lens hood, is that it fits WAY to tightly. I have to fight to twist it on and off of my lens. I'm almost afraid I'm going to break it due to the force I have to apply. I've checked the grooves the hood attaches to on my lens and on the hood and both are free of any obstructions. I've used the hood for 3 months now and it still retains its resistance to twist. Granted, this is great because I know the hood isn't going anywhere once its twisted onto the lens, but its a major [*] to twist the darn thing in either direction. Other than that, I have no complaints about this hood and highly recommend buying one.

It is a simple lens hood, but what was really impressive to me was that the staff was able to help me over the phone. [...]
