Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Apart from regular landscape , floral and company photos I take, EW 78B lens hood has been a big help with most of my macro studio lighting shots. We normally use a black board cut and pasted to the extender of all our tripods. It shields the slave lights (including under the glass table lighting). Adding this tool had helped me remove stray lights and focus on the light needed for our specimen.
The hood is made of plastic and it tends to bend and adjust with the other contents in my lowepro bag. I don't know if it will warp if I keep it long enough in there specially when travelling. Carrying it vertically gives me that apprehension. So far it has served its purpose.
If there's a company that would make a bag for all lens hood of different sizes with sturdy sides that would be great.

Is it worth the price? I bought it because I couldn't find a cheap alternative. My experience with a collapsable rubber hood on my Ef75-300 was not good. It fell of when it bumped against something, which was often, and it tore at the fold.
The EF 28-135 is my basic walk-around lens and it on my camera about 80 percent of the time, and I am rarely without my camera. The hood doesn't pop off when it bumps into solid objects and it's not going to tear.
Still, it's an awful lot of money for a piece of plastic. Lens hoods should be provided with each lens, like other lens manufacturers.

I love this lens hood. Unfortunately, the UV filter that I have doesn't have threads, and no problem there because the Canon lens hood doesn't utilize the threads on the camera. Very simply to use, and it gives great coverage. Definitely going to buy another canon lens hood soon.

So, OK, it's a lens hood. It fits the lens the way it should. Pricey for a simple piece of plastic. Annoying that Canon doesn't include with the lens when it comes as a kit. I would rather they increase the overall price than nickel and dime you on items like lens hoods and tripod rings.

I bought this lens hood for my EF 28-135mm lens. Works like a champ! Keeps out unwanted glares yet lets in the light coming from the subject without hindrance. My only real problem with it is that it was not included with the lens itself. It's easy to install and uninstall. If needed, it can be installed backwards for storage and/or travel. It works tremendously and I would recommend that photographers working in bright conditions should purchase one.

Assorted web reviews said that this item was too expensive, so I was a bit hesitant when I ordered it. But I think its well worth it.
The hood mounts with a nice quarter turn lock in both positions: normal, and reversed to nestle over the lens. The standard Canon lens cap works over the hood in both positions.
