If you bought the 85mm 1.8, then you definately need to purchase this lens hood to go with it. This hood is easy to attach and remove and seems to be well constructed. I like using a lens hood because I feel that it gives my lens a little extra protection as well.

Pinches on and off easily, rotates once snapped into place, a little loose, but not sloppy. The hood is made from fairly thin material - the hood that came with my 24-70mm is much more substantial. I would have expected something a bit sturdier for the price. Good, not great. It works.

Bought it for my Canon 85 1.8 lens. It serves its purpose, but I would rather have the lens hoods like the ones that came with my L lenses (Twist on). Needed it because I always shoot with lens hoods.

_Likes: [1] The hood is long enough to provide some nice physical protection to the lens, so I use the lens without a UV filter. [2] It's also nice that the hood's inner surface has flocking to reduce reflections, and that it less expensive than some other Canon hoods. _Dislikes: [1] As other reviewers have noted, the retractable clips that hold the lens in place do seem fragile. But I have not had any trouble with them so far. [2] The depth of the hood means that you can't rotate filters with the hood in place, but this is common with most hoods. _Recommendations: [1] I recommend wiggling the hood after you attach it to ensure it is in place; I almost lost mine in a lake once because it wasn't attached securely when I thought it was.

The mechanism on this hood is different than on my other Canon lenses. This hood does rotate to securely lock into place. It has two, difficult to press buttons that allow you to place the hood on the lens, either for use or reversed for storage. Even with the buttons depressed, it is difficult to get the hood to properly attach to the lens. It is equally awkward to remove.
I was going to purchase a third-party hood to save some money, but when the design was described as above, I decided to pay extra for the Canon. I did not realize that the third-party hood was a copy of the (very poor) Canon design. This hood functions once in place, but is a needlessly poor design, that is a royal pain to use.

I usually love Canon products. But this design is horrible. I'm sure it would be just great if it stayed on the lens. Unfortunately, three of the four little "teeth" that are suppose to come out broke off the first time I used it. Now, with one tooth left, it doesn't stay on. Don't waste your money. Ask Canon to go back to the drawing board and provide a bayonet style lens hood that is durable like their other products...

Offers protection and controls stray light, exactly what a hood is supposed to do.

Better than any other 3rd part brand, but is a tottally different design than any other original canon hood I own. It does not twist on, but you squeeze it, and 4 tiny, thin clasps go in & out to lock it on. It can spin when attached to the lens, but does not effect anything, just feels wierd, and I have a suspicion it won't last too long till one of those fragile clasps breaks. However like I said, no other options out there, as I tried and hated 3rd party hoods, but could be better designed

This does what it is supposed to do, but the one thing that bothers me from this hood is that unlike many other canon lens hoods, it clips on rather than screw on the lens.
You have to push 2 small release buttons on the bottom of the hood and then place it on the lens, but the hood can still freely rotate around the lens which bothers me a bit. It always seem like it's not secured in place, and feels a bit cheap.

I'm not a huge fan of lens hoods in general, but I tend to use one on my 85mm prime. They are useful as a lens protector as well as for minimizing flare. I bought a super-cheap knock-off brand, but if you looked at it the wrong way it would fall off! Even though this Canon lens hood has sort of a spring-loaded collar like the 3rd party hood, it fits much tighter and secure. I'd give it 5 stars but for this bizarre collar design where you have to press these 2 opposing buttons to attach the hood. It wasn't horribly over-priced like some Canon accessories, so I'd say it is worth the extra $ in this case.

i expected a bayonet style attachment, since i'm used to that with my other canon lenses...this is sort of cheesy...i know it's gonna break sooner or later because of the construction...it's ok, nothing better to say...frankly, i expected more from canon...i mean, how much more would it cost to build a quality product like other lenses? i only recommend this lens because there is nothing else canon makes that is better constructed..

I wish I'd known it wasn't a bayonet style hood, you have to press the sides to insert it. I don't like this system that much, it feels kind of loose. On top of that the plastic material is a little flimsy.
I bought if for my 85 f/1.8, and being an APS-C user, that makes for a fairly narrow FOV, which means that flare is not much of an issue. Invest your money in a good filter instead of this product.

I know the importance of a hood and struggled with getting one or not for my 85 1.8. (I really think they should include one) I've only had the lens for about 6 months and so far am very pleased with the pictures it produces. I finally purchased the hood and I was really surprised. There is definatley a difference in the images. I highly recommend getting the genuine canon product because it was designed for the lens. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. I highly recommend B&H because they really do have the best prices around. I've checked...

Had a 3rd party hood for my 85mm f/1.8 for about a year. I hated the clip in style hood vs the twist lock type normally found on Canon lenses. It was difficult to put on and prone to coming undone. Decided to try the Canon version to see if it made a difference. I still like the bayonet mount more but the Canon ET-65III is a much better hood than the off brands in this case. It mounts securely and quickly, I don't worry that it will be knocked off anymore. The plastic is sturdier and of course the inside has the usual Canon flocking. All in all it is worth the small price difference. Recommended.

Up till now, all my hoods have been the bayonet type, but being the clip on type, I don't have to look to see where to screw it on. Just push in the two tabs and snap it on. I bought this for a ef 100-300mm Canon lens that I will use for outdoor landscape and wildlife photography. I feel a lens hood is necessary with any digital camera. It fits my lens very well and has proven to be a great product. It will also fit several other Canon lens I'm considering.
