Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

i expected a bayonet style attachment, since i'm used to that with my other canon lenses...this is sort of cheesy...i know it's gonna break sooner or later because of the construction...it's ok, nothing better to say...frankly, i expected more from canon...i mean, how much more would it cost to build a quality product like other lenses? i only recommend this lens because there is nothing else canon makes that is better constructed..

It does what' it's supposed to do. Nice lining on the inside too. Easy to take on and off. Only con - the price. Seems high for what it is...but it still wouldn't stop me from getting it.

I've been using the Zeiss ZE (35 and 50mm) primes, which are renowned for the build quality and while I love the Canon 85 1.8, I was worried about the build/attachment of this sold-separately lens hood. The Zeiss lens hoods (metal) rotate and lock, while the Canon (durable plastic) require you to pinch to sides to attach. Taking it out of the box, I was impressed with how sturdy the plastic was. Attaching was a zip - I'd read some stories of how annoying it was securing the hood. But I got on the first try. I've used now it in several shoots over the past three weeks and it does its job admirably. The only minor issue I have is that the hood can rotate while locked on the lens, unlike the Zeiss, which remain in a fixed position. If you own the above lenses, you have no reason not to have it.

It does the job, but I prefer the bayonet style of attachment of Canon's other lens hoods. But, since this lens doesn't have that mount, this works more conveniently than a threaded hood.
It probably won't survive the first solid hit. The teeth holding it on don't look too solid. But maybe that way it will absorb some of the force of a hit rather than transferring it all to the lens like a metal hood would.
Another problem, it's not easy to feel when you have it on all the way when attaching it.

I use this hood on a 85mm f1.8. It is better than the alternative hood you can find but still not that great. it seams really fragile and you have to be really carefull when you put it on or off.

I use lens hoods on all my lenses. This is a basic lens hood and it does the job. My only complaint is the way it clips on, doesn't seem very sturdy. I wish Canon would redesign it with a bayonet mount and/or lock so it would stay on better.

I'm used to the screw on kind of lens caps, with a quick turn and a lock and you know it's secure. This has two squeezable grips that I am still getting used to. Maybe my hands are too small but I can't quite get it to secure on the first try. No other complaints, works as intended. I'm sure with a little more use, I will get the hang of it.

I use this on a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8, 135mm f/2.8 SF and 70-210mm f/3.5-4.5. Not very exciting, but it does its job and does it well. I tried aftermarket lens hoods and they are junk! They don't fit right and fall off. The Canon hoods fit perfect, stay on well and are obviously much better constructed. I wish Canon would just include the hood with the lens, like Sigma, but...
There are no drawbacks, except the price.

While I love Canon, and I love my Canon lenses, the hoods leave something to be desired. In my opinion, they really should come with the lens itself in the first place. For what they are, they are rather over-priced. The second I felt the mounting mechanism I was disappointed--you *know* it will break sooner rather than later and for the price, it all just feels very flimsy and cheap. A bayonet mount would be so much easier, sturdier, and longer-lasting.

Bought it for my Canon 85 1.8 lens. It serves its purpose, but I would rather have the lens hoods like the ones that came with my L lenses (Twist on). Needed it because I always shoot with lens hoods.

_Likes: [1] The hood is long enough to provide some nice physical protection to the lens, so I use the lens without a UV filter. [2] It's also nice that the hood's inner surface has flocking to reduce reflections, and that it less expensive than some other Canon hoods. _Dislikes: [1] As other reviewers have noted, the retractable clips that hold the lens in place do seem fragile. But I have not had any trouble with them so far. [2] The depth of the hood means that you can't rotate filters with the hood in place, but this is common with most hoods. _Recommendations: [1] I recommend wiggling the hood after you attach it to ensure it is in place; I almost lost mine in a lake once because it wasn't attached securely when I thought it was.

The mechanism on this hood is different than on my other Canon lenses. This hood does rotate to securely lock into place. It has two, difficult to press buttons that allow you to place the hood on the lens, either for use or reversed for storage. Even with the buttons depressed, it is difficult to get the hood to properly attach to the lens. It is equally awkward to remove.
I was going to purchase a third-party hood to save some money, but when the design was described as above, I decided to pay extra for the Canon. I did not realize that the third-party hood was a copy of the (very poor) Canon design. This hood functions once in place, but is a needlessly poor design, that is a royal pain to use.

I usually love Canon products. But this design is horrible. I'm sure it would be just great if it stayed on the lens. Unfortunately, three of the four little "teeth" that are suppose to come out broke off the first time I used it. Now, with one tooth left, it doesn't stay on. Don't waste your money. Ask Canon to go back to the drawing board and provide a bayonet style lens hood that is durable like their other products...

Better than any other 3rd part brand, but is a tottally different design than any other original canon hood I own. It does not twist on, but you squeeze it, and 4 tiny, thin clasps go in & out to lock it on. It can spin when attached to the lens, but does not effect anything, just feels wierd, and I have a suspicion it won't last too long till one of those fragile clasps breaks. However like I said, no other options out there, as I tried and hated 3rd party hoods, but could be better designed

This does what it is supposed to do, but the one thing that bothers me from this hood is that unlike many other canon lens hoods, it clips on rather than screw on the lens.
You have to push 2 small release buttons on the bottom of the hood and then place it on the lens, but the hood can still freely rotate around the lens which bothers me a bit. It always seem like it's not secured in place, and feels a bit cheap.
