Canon ET-83 II Lens Hood for EF 70-200mm f/2.8L Lens
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

When I bought my canon lens used, it didn't have the lens hood. I purchased a generic lens hood and have always had trouble getting it to stay on the lens. This one works perfectly! I highly recommend the extra pennies be put into buying a lens hood that is the same brand as the lens, what a difference! Just be careful not to loose it :)

Up above the 48º latitude, misty, drizzly or sleet often can ruin a photo shooting.
You need to have your camera ready, and can't always clean your lens
when a wildlife or maritime scene won't wait.
Even for time-lapse photography, a Canon Lens Hood is a necessity.
Moonrises would be lost without an effective hood on my Canon 70/200
telephoto lens on my 7D camera.
