Use it and abuse of it! It does work at 1.4 and that's a long way from 4.0. Both aren't perfect at the largest aperture (I'm comparing a 24-105 4L with the 35 1.4L), but since buying the 35 I stopped using the zoom. What is great? Fast.
I bought it Halloween afternoon so I could use it at night and it was just wonderful. It always was my first choice of lens, but I could not convince my wife that although it is NOT a zoom it does deliver "nice" pics. She didn't note the difference of the lenses but DID acknowledge the improvement of the pictures...
IF you, amateur as I am, think you might need the large aperture for kids inside, go for it. For a closer comparison I used for a long time a Sigma 50mm 2.8f macro EX. But the 35mm gives me more keepers.
It took me 4 years to buy the lens and now I realize that I should have done it before (before upgrading twice the body and buying the L zoom). Much better had I kept my EOS 300D (the lowest Rebel at that time)with this lens instead of using the 5D MarkII with the lenses I had...

This is a very good wide angle prime lens from Canon. The focal length is commonly one that can be a walk around lens. It is well balanced and easy to hold during shooting. The lens is not overwhelmingly sharp at the wide apertures but good bokeh. The corners are not so great at these apertures. THe sharpness improves at f2.8 and by f4 very sharp and decent corners on a full frame sensor. The lens does suffer from a bit more CA than i had hoped. Overall stopped down it is an outstanding landscape lens. At the wide apertures, good for portraits.

everything I wanted it to be for my T3i. Like many, I started with a 50mm but found it too tight. This is my 2nd prime and will stay on my camera 98% of the time.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
Having never used a fast prime lens, I was a little leery of jumping on this, but I'm glad I did. After a few months of owning the 35mm, I sold my 24-105L since I never used it anymore.
The focus ring is silky-smooth. AF is fast and silent.
At f/1.4, there is a fair amount of CA and images aren't as sharp as I would have expected, but once the lens is stopped down, image quality is awesome.
I use this lens on my 60D for nature photos, family photos, and as a walk-around. I don't miss my zoom at all.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
The 35L stays glued to my 5DmkII body 99% of the time. It's tact sharp at f/1.4 and is very versatile. Whether I want to photograph people, or if I want to photograph a landscape. This is well worth the money I spent on it. Even thought I consider myself more of a city/landscape photographer, I find myself using my 35L more than my 24-105L lens. Don't think about it, just purchase this lens. You won't regret it!

You definitely get what you pay for. I was nervous being that this was my first high end lens purchase. It really hurt me to spend 1500, being a full time student. I am glad I made the purchase though. Beautiful lens, beautiful glass. Sharp and perfect for the type of shooting I do.

I've wanted this lens for a long time. It's simply awesome. Sharp as a tack and a great story telling lens. I work for a newspaper and have used 2.8 zooms extensively but there's something special about this lens. Get one, you won't regret it.

Doesn't have the bokeh of the 50L but it is SO sharp and the auto focus is extremely reliable (unlike the 50L).

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens to shoot an elaborate sweet 16 for a good friends daugther. Prior to it had purchased the Canon 5D MKii and was eager to put a lens on it that did it justice. It has ben spectacular!! The images are crystal clear and the colors are true. I think that this lens has convinced me to go "prime" on all purchases in the future. I recommend it for all full-frame Canon cameras and anyone who wants a great image. It's truly worth the money! I am enthusiastic about shooting again!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
It is the backbone lens for photojournalism and documentary work. It is the most versatile prime lens in the canon range allowing for great low light work. Not much distortion is caused by the by the lens, though perspective correction remains a problem with 35mm digital, it minimises the same to a good extent.
