Use it and abuse of it! It does work at 1.4 and that's a long way from 4.0. Both aren't perfect at the largest aperture (I'm comparing a 24-105 4L with the 35 1.4L), but since buying the 35 I stopped using the zoom. What is great? Fast.
I bought it Halloween afternoon so I could use it at night and it was just wonderful. It always was my first choice of lens, but I could not convince my wife that although it is NOT a zoom it does deliver "nice" pics. She didn't note the difference of the lenses but DID acknowledge the improvement of the pictures...
IF you, amateur as I am, think you might need the large aperture for kids inside, go for it. For a closer comparison I used for a long time a Sigma 50mm 2.8f macro EX. But the 35mm gives me more keepers.
It took me 4 years to buy the lens and now I realize that I should have done it before (before upgrading twice the body and buying the L zoom). Much better had I kept my EOS 300D (the lowest Rebel at that time)with this lens instead of using the 5D MarkII with the lenses I had...

This is a very good wide angle prime lens from Canon. The focal length is commonly one that can be a walk around lens. It is well balanced and easy to hold during shooting. The lens is not overwhelmingly sharp at the wide apertures but good bokeh. The corners are not so great at these apertures. THe sharpness improves at f2.8 and by f4 very sharp and decent corners on a full frame sensor. The lens does suffer from a bit more CA than i had hoped. Overall stopped down it is an outstanding landscape lens. At the wide apertures, good for portraits.

This by far has turned out to be one of my favorite all time lenses. Have no idea why I waited so long to get it. I own both the Canon 5D,Mii and 7D and this lens works great with both. I highly recommend that you consider getting this one.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
I have had my share of L lenses, and I have to say this is the best L Ive purchased. I recently sold my 24-70L (although a great and sharp lens, I was having a problem with to much camera shake as I have MS and carrying it around all day proved to be daunting for me) to purchase a 50L 1.2, I had been using the 50 1.4, but wanted to upgrade as I thought the sharpness would be better on the 1.2 over the 1.4 and that the weight would be less than the 24-70L to help me with the camera shake issue...and boy was I wrong...I must have gotten a lemon as it would not focus but 2 out of 10 shots on both my 5d mark II or my T2i, and then when it did focus those 2 times, the photos were so soft they were unusable even at F4! (I even used the micro adjustment on the mark and could not get it anywhere close) I was not about to spend that kind of money on an unusable lens, so I returned it to BH and without question they refunded my money, so I decided to give the 35 a try since I needed a prime for low light weddings. I also purchased the sigma 17-50 2.8 to use on my T2i to go along with this 35L. I shot a wedding this weekend with the pair, and I can definitely say that I am extremely pleased with how both preformed! Sharp through out! Sharpest lenses I have owned! Also, I got very consistent results as well along with fast and accurate focusing... The only con on the 35 is that I am having a problem getting the lens hood to go on smoothly, but hey, to get a lens this sharp with no focusing issues I am 150% happy! I can easily see this lens staying on my Mark 100% of the time...I won't go back to either 50mm lenses...I can just stick this 35L on my T2i (same image sensor as the 7d) and have close to a 50 equivalent....So for me...the 35 is a must now! Where as I have sold other L's as they were just not for me, I finally found one that is!

Super Fast Focus on my 7D. Bright even at lower ISOs. Sharp isn't a strong enough word for the wonderful pictures this lens takes. B&H are wonderful as well. Faster Delivery than Estimated and they discounted the freight because they could ship it faster and cheaper. Couldn't ask for more!

I had always thought lens is just a lens... boy, am I wrong!
I was happy with my 50mm/1.8, the cheapest lens in the Canon family. I thought I'd give this 35mm/1.4 a try after some pressure from my close friend.
I can see the quality as clear as day and night. People are commenting on the pictures I'm taking.
I'm never going to say lens is just a lens ever again.
Highly recommended!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
I have really enjoyed the 35 1.4L from Canon so far. In comparison to the Nikon 35 1.4g, the af system on the Canon version is noticeably faster AND a few hundred dollars cheaper.
It was a tough decision to buy the 35 f/1.4 instead of the 24 f/1.4 until I finally received the prime and played with it. My eyes opened and I realized that I tend to view certain scenarios through a 35mm focal length versus a 24mm or 50mm. It is a perfect focal length for me. Also, as many others have mentioned, the 35 f/1.4 does have a certain look to it because of the huge aperture. It gives you that nice 3D pop to it along with some very vivid and contrasty colors. For anyone in doubt as to whether they should buy the 35 or 24, I would try using the 24-70 set at those focal lengths and see how you like it. Another thing you could try is to overlook your photos and see if you tend to lean towards the 24mm or 35mm focal length. You will not be disappointed with either prime lens!
For the pixel-peepers, there is chroma aberration when used wide open but it is only noticeable at 100% crop. I find the CA to be much more controlled than the Nikon version. As far as sharpness goes, it is super sharp from f/2 and up. At f/1.4 it is still sharp but just not AS sharp. For the price, the lens is definitely worth it if you need auto AF. If you do not need the auto AF AND money is not an issue, I would look into the Zeiss 35 f/1.4 Distagon instead. Otherwise, this prime lens and the 135 f/2 are my favorite Canon primes out there! Pair this 35 1.4L with the 135 f/2 L and you have an amazing street/portrait setup.
*Note* - I have not tested the AF on a sports body, however, it works great on my 5d mark ii.

I normally use it for portrait and passport photo with my 5D II.
It is a great lens, fast, sharp, specially great for indoor and low light. Aperture select between f2-f11 is the best choice.
The only thing I do not like is a bit heavy.
I highly recommend to any body who specially like
portrait photography.

This lens was a Christmas prsent to myself. I've had it for a little over a week now & I LOVE this lens! It is my second L lens (my other L is the 70-200 II)& it definately is worthy of its L badge! At f/1.4 it is a little soft (I shoot with a 7D), but even wide open the images are certainly usable. At f/2.0 things get REALLY sharp! This is a great focal length for a crop body camera. You won't be disapointed!!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
On a full frame body, this lens is perfect for indoor and close-range outdoor low light shooting.
It has neutral bokeh, which about as good as you can get on a lens this sharp, and smooth focusing like all Canon L glass.
The only problem is some green and magenta fringing in high contrast areas, but it's easily dealt with if shooting RAW.
Overall it's very similar to the 24 1.4, just longer.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
I really thought this lens would be much bigger & heavier. To my surprise it is very compact & doesn't weigh you down like most "L" lenses do. The color quality is superb & this is a perfect lens for those tight spaces. Before I purchased this lens I primarily used my 50mm f/1.8 for shooting candid shots of my wee one inside. This is now my go to lens for those indoor shots. Love love love it!

A good lens but not at all sharp wide open! Gets better at 2.0, but not razor sharp until 2.2 or 2.5. If you want to be safe just go to 2.8 & be done with it. It would be stellar if good at 1.4,! It is still a good lens, but I really expected more!!

I use it in a 60D, and I have to say I'm really happy with the image quality, it is so sharp that it blows your mind. At f/1.4 you are getting 10 times more light that the kit lens! With this baby now you can shot indoors without a problem. I can even shoot at 1/200 s and by pushing it a bit in post I can get decent pictures - great party lens. Sometimes it feels a bit too narrow on a 1.6 crop, so try to set your current zoom lens to that length and see for yourself if you feel comfortable.
Focuses really quick and feels very well made. And don't get me started on the bokeh!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
I decided to sell my Canon 24-70 2.8L , and switch over to prime/fixed lenses. I have been wanting to make the switch for quite awhile , but was scared to be without the versatility of a zoom lens.
I am a pretty versitile photographer , and get paid to shoot scenery , products , weddings , and fashion/models - so it's always a challenge finding products that have the range needed to cover this many fields of work.
My 24-70 took care almost everything . A decent wide angle/fast aperture for scenery and weddings , crisp images at it's telephoto end for my portraits and beauty , it even handled products quite nicely due to its MACRO ability..... however - it has a few to many soft point at different focal ranges/F-stops.
I decided to go with 2 lenses to replace this one lens , and I could not be happier ! I decided on the Canon 35mm 1.4L , and the Canon 100mm 2.8L Macro. Focusing speed , sharpness , contrast are amazing with both of these. I have been using them on my 5Dm2 and my 1Dm2 , and the results are just amazing , definitely worth the extra money , and little bit of hastle changing lenses when I am using a single body. Highly reccomended !!!!

I use it for a lot different topics, I find it very good because in all of these different situation, it always exceed my expectation.
The great thing of it is the performance in dark is amazing, the only concern about it is the focus precision, and I think it maybe related to the camera.
