Comments about Novoflex Castel-L Focusing Rack Standard:

We originally rented the Novoflex Mini and liked many of its qualities. Ultimately we bought the Castel-L. We thought it would serve our long term wants/needs the best.

The rail is a solid piece metal. It is one long arca-swiss compatible dovetail with 3 attachment locations. It can be mounted on any quick release if one lacks AS. It is very flexible this way. The camera mount is very solid and is part of the rail. It has measurements down one side that are easy to see. The movement is smooth. Locking is precise and stable. It also packs into the gear bag nicely.

We got this rail over the Mini as this one has measurements and the dovetail. We are upgrading to arca swiss compatible gear and we stack photos. This is why we think the Castel-L is better suited to our needs. It is worth the price difference. It is an excellent tool for macro work.

The Cadillac of focusing rails

By Timm

Comments about Novoflex Castel-L Focusing Rack Standard:

I've been using this rail for a couple of months now. I useit for high-magnification macro, stacked high-DOF images, asa nodal point adjuster for panos, and for close-up stereoimaging. The rail is rock-solid. There's absolutely no flex even whenthe camera is cantilevered fully on the rail. When used with a head having an Arca-Swiss style clamp, thefull-length Arca-Swiss compatible dovetails on the bottom ofthe rail increase the range of the rail by about twice, andallow for rapid coarse adjustment. The geared adjustment isjust fine enough for high-mag stacks. By mounting an AS compatible QR clamp on the built-inMiniConnect QR, it's quick and easy to change theorientation of the QR clamp when switching from the cameraQR mount to a lens with collar and foot, or turn the camerasideways for stereo. The MiniConnect QR is strong and stable. The build and finish are nearly perfect.

Expertise: Pro

Problems Encountered: You can buy a decent ballhead for the price of this rail. The rack gearing is not perfectly smooth. For the price, Iexpect better. The geared focusing is barely fine enough at1:1 reproduction ratios, especially for stacking (makingmultiple images with shallow DOF which are combined tocreate very deep DOF without diffusion artifacts fromstopping down). The knob for locking the rail is not captive and is easily lost.

Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Kirk Long-Rail Plate

Items I Recommend: Arca-Swiss compatible head; A-S compatible clamp w/1/4 thread
