Get the type of lens and film for the shot you need, and keep a plenty of batteries handy.

The Nikon F100 35mm SLR Camera (Body) is a professional-specification 35mm SLR camera that's smaller and lighter than Nikon's F6 flagship.  All the critical elements are here, but with less weight: magnesium alloy construction, extensive weather sealing, and extremely durable shutter, & speedy AF that you can rely upon.

The F100 has a maximum drive speed of 4.5 frames per second, even with predictive autofocus, and shares the Nikon trademark 3D Matrix Metering of their top cameras.  There's also spot metering, which you can link to the autofocus point.  Composing from an F100 is quite an upgrade if you're only used to APS-C style digital SLRs; the extremely bright and spacious all-glass pentaprism viewfinder is one to envy.  Nearly everything you touch upon the F100 has durable rubber fitted to it, and 22 custom functions allow further personalized control.

It's basically a smaller, lighter, more comfortable F5. I prefer it for its size and weight (in fact, I skipped the F5 in favor of the F100). The F6 has since eclipsed it, but the F100 is still no slouch. The AF is fast, though only five sensor. I find it to be similar to but faster and more accurate than that in my D70s. The sensors are nice and wide and they are tilted a bit for better target acquisition, and it is compatible with all of the current lens technologies. It works great with NiMH rechargables and the grip is optional, so it's a great, fairly rugged and capable travel camera for a pro/semi-pro/enthusiast. There are some negatives, but they aren't deal killers. The exposure meter is black and white, not color, like the F5. It can get fooled a little on certain ultra-saturated colors, especially when shooting slide film. I just remember to set some exposeure compensation with crazy-intense colors. This will not be noticable with prints. The custom menu is indecipherable. I photocopied the key and laminated several copies to hide everywhere. There is no mirror lockup, so it's not a good tripod camera for extreme lenses; get an F5 or F4 for that, but I've never found it to be a problem. I've had a problem with the rubber covering coming loose after years of hard use. My repair guy fixed it during a cleaning. Finally, don't drop it five feet onto concrete directly onto the right (from front) strap lug. I broke the rewind fork and kinked the frame. I'm not the only one to have this problem, but considering the severity of the drop, it's not bad. I had the fork replaced and it's now 100% functional. Despite experiencing basically every problem with the F100, it's still my go-to AF film camera for its overall speed and streamlined use.Get 'em while they last. They are a bargain and they don't make them anymore.

I've owned an F-100 for 10 years and have owned many Nikons including the D90 and D50. The F-100 is simply the best and, practical and fun to use camera ,period. There is nothing like shooting Film and nothing even close to shooting film in an F-100. BUY ONE NEW WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!!

Comments about Nikon F100 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only):

This is probably the best film camera that Nikon has ever made. Especially when used with the battery pack. You get it all with this incredible device. I've always depended on this camera when focus speed and exposure where critical. With the optional MB 15 battery pack, the camera is fast enough for just about anything. The worse thing you will ever have to deal with is the cheap plastic camera back locks. They are know to break requiring you to purchase a new camera back. It happened on mine.

This is my last and BEST 35mm film camera.
When you're sure you missed a shot, the F100 will come through with a great picture every time.
Digital is convenient, but when you really want to learn the art of photography, buy a F100, you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Nikon F100 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only):

Great metering. Easy controls. VERY durable and comfortable body design. Takes the same lenses, and autofocuses as accurately, as your Nikon DSLR.(not DX of course) It is a fully featured camera, and is good for just about everything. One of the last and greatest in the companies line of 35 mm production.

Comments about Nikon F100 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only):

I HAVE TWO F100/MB-15 AND ONE F5. FIRST, F100/MB-15 COULD DO ANYTHINGS I NEED FOR MY NIKON NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY OF OHIO.
SECOND, EXPOSURE COMPENSATION WITH CUSTOM SETTING IS SIMPLE. 1/3 FSTOPS INCREMENTS IS BEST. FILM REWIND FROM F100 IS SWEET SUPERB!! DEAD ON!!
FIRST, THERE ARE TWO THINGS I USE THE MOST,
A: FOR GENERAL PURPOSE USE, USE CUSTOM SETTING 1-1; FILM REWIND AT THE END OF FILM ROLL, SIMPLE BUT LOUD WHIRRING SOUND. IT DO NOT BOTHER ME BECAUSE I AM DEAF. B: FOR SILENT FILM REWIND, IT DO THE BEST JOB, HOW, FIRST USE FILM ADVANCE MODE SELECTOR, SWITCH FROM S OR C TO CS, FIRING 3 FRAMES PER SECOND THEN SILENT FILM REWIND AT THE END OF FILM ROLL. NOT BAD! HUH? C: THERE ARE TWO THINGS ANY OF YOU/F100 USERS DID NOT KNOW THAT BUT LEARN THIS FROM ME ABOUT TWO THINGS, FOR HIGH SPEED MOTOR DRIVE WHILE FILM REWIND NEED TO BE SILENT, SIMPLE, USE CUSTOM SETTING 1-0,AUTOMATIC FILM REWIND AT THE END OF FILM ROLL MUST BE DISABLED [INITIAL SETTING], WHEN FILM IS DONE, TURN FILM ADVANCE MODE SELECTOR FROM S OR C TO CS THEN PRESS TWO BUTTONS: EXPOSYRE BRACKETING AND FILM REWIND BUTTON AT THE SAME TIME, FILM REWIND IS SILENT. D: IT IS NOT FOUND ON THE F100 INSTRUCTION MANUAL BOOK, AND I HAVE TRIED AND OH, MY! IT'S SUPER AMAZING, YOU WONT BELIEVE IT, F100 DOES IT AND I BELIEVE THAT NIKON OF USA AND JAPAN DO NOT KNOW. HOW OR BIG HOW??????
EITHER WAY, S OR C OR CS ON FILM ADVANCE MODE SELECTOR AND EITHER WAY FILM REWIND AT THE END OF FILM ROLL OR PRESS TWO BUTTONS, WHEN FILM REWIND, TURN CAMERA POWER OFF WHILE FILM REWIND AT THE SAME TIME, IT'S DONE! YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT FOR FILM FINISH REWIND THEN TURN POWER OFF. PERIOD!
F100/MB-15.....MY NEW WAY OF MY NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY LIFE.

I'm an advanced amature nature photographer
that loves Landscapes, widelife,& close-up photography. This is the best film camera I've ever owned. After upgrading from a N80 and another previously owned film camera, the difference is remarkable. The auto focus is very fast as is the film advance. The film drive is so quick, when I push the shutter button I hear only one sound(the shutter and the film advancing simultaneously). The 3D Matrix, center weighted & spot(which I love) work great.

Comments about Nikon F100 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only):

This is an excellent film SLR body, I dare say Nikon's best for non-pro photographers.

The camera's operation is simply a joy. Simple and smooth film insertion an loading, large, clear and reliable control knobs and LCD panel. The camera is relatively quiet, fast film advance, blazingly fast built in AF motor (compared to the D70 for example).

Standard Alkaline AA cells last long, the viewfinder is nice and clear.
AF operation can be moved from the 'half press' shutter button to one of the thumb buttons by custom functions menu, as I'm doing on all my AF SLRs.

                Cons:

Custom functions user interface is sub-par by todays standards. Ok for the time the F100 was designed.

The 10 pin connector, used for shutter release cable and some more rare functions is a nuisance.

Continuous shooting isn't as fast as with pro DSLRs.

I'm not knocking off any stars for the 'cons' I mention, since no other camera in the same class of the F100 has done any better.

Purchased my copy, from B&H, four years ago. Probably one of the last high quality 35mm SLRs we are going to see.

It is a heavy chunky piece of equipment. But in actual usage one does not notice that. It is a pleasure to work with.

Before digital takes over the whole world, and although I own a N80, I wanted a new “prosumer” film-based SLR to ensure continued B&W shooting. I got just what I needed with the F100. Although more expensive than used versions, I bought mine new as I wanted to be sure it hadn’t been through any rough treatment. The F100 provides great results, feels sturdy, and can use all of my modern Nikon lenses without a problem. I enjoy it more than my D300!

Comments about Nikon F100 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only):

I've had an F100 w/MB15 Battery/Vertical grip for almost 2 years and have no desire whatsoever to go digital. Photos come out phenomenal straight from the camera. I shoot in Program Mode, *Program, and Aperature Priority mostly in Matrix metering setting. Nikon's metering system is incredible and I find the auto focus fast. The focus zone selection controls are easy and well designed....I don't have to take my eye off the viewfinder to switch focus zones. Shooting with an SB28 Flash is easy. I have a Stofen bounce on my flash unit. Photos come out incredible....especially daylight fill flash.I can get HDR images from film and I didn't have to spend $4,000 on a system!

Comments about Nikon F100 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only):

I own the D80 and the more I shoot Digital - the more I become interested in film - so I decided to buy the F100 before they don't make film cameras any more. I've already had 3 pictures enlarged because they came out so great using the F100. The F100 is much faster than the D80 and takes all the lenses I have and is compatable with my SB-600 and the VR lenses. I use it with B & W film of which there are several great types. The only complaint is that the metering choice button sticks so you have to jiggled it to get to center weighted and spot weighted metering functions displayed in the view finder.

I figured outthough that you must depress the shutter button halfwayafter you load the film to get it to catch. It works on thefirst time every time.

Comments about Nikon F100 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only):

I brought the F100 just so I can take pictures with a variety of lenses that are available without having to pay a hefty price. I wanted to be able shoot pictures at a professional level with a lot of enjoyment. So far, I have taken pictures of my family, friends and co-workers. They loved the results when I have my Nikon 28-105mm and my Nikon SB800 Speedlight Flash attached to the camera. I became especially very happy after I taken pictures at the car show in NYC.Sometimes, I do get poor results after seeing the pictures were underexposed. But, I learn more of what could be causing the problem. I end up getting better results. Also, I already consider in keeping this camera for a very long time because it really doesn't disappoints me anyway. I already had it for a few years.

Problems Encountered: It is true after I learned for the first time and realized that the battery indicator doesn't tell me exactly how much battery power is available. It will continue operating until it stops me from being able to shoot pictures and than I ask myself, What Happened? After observing the LCD display, I saw that the battery indicator is flashing. Also, this is a heavy camera. I wouldn't keep this camera around my neck all day long. Sometimes, when I am loading fresh new film, the camera wouldn't load right away. So I had to play with the film and keep trying by opening and closing the film door on the back of the camera until it does.
