Original Nikon equipment and does protect the lens in both the sun shade position and reverse stored position. Works as advertised but if it were made of rubber would work better.

Sometimes the most minor link in what is otherwise an expensive set of photo equipment can be a simple hood made for a specific lens, and that link can be a necessary part of good, and reliable image-making. I never use a lens without its hood, not just for shots into the sun but for all the ambient light that surrounds me, even indoors; and B&H has come up with a Nikon hood for a lens that I purchased used and is no longer a Nikkor product. I moved up from DX (a D200) to my D700 (also a recent B&H purchase) and so had to sell my great DX-only 16-85 VR Nikkor, and replace it with a 28-105 AF Nikkor, which with its new lens hood gives me my only zoom alternative to my otherwise prime lens collection. The Nikon hood does the job, mitigating and usually eliminating most possible glare issues and the hood bayonets conveniently on the 28-105 for storage in my working bag. I'm really happy that older-model lens hoods are so conveniently available for my older Nikkor lenses[...]
