The Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter enables the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. Neutral density filters are available in 1, 2 or 3 stops to suit individual situations.
Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. This filter enables cloud detail to be kept correctly exposed in the picture.
Determining which graduated neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Choose the filter strength which adjusts the lighting to stay within the exposure latitude (greatest difference between bright/dark values) which still shows details in both of the digital or film medium in use.
Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6 - the filter's clear portion allows 4x more light to pass vs. darkest portion) effectively compensates average bright sky-to-foreground situations, and the soft transition is applicable more often to a scene than the hard transition

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
The optical quality of this filter is without a doubt the best there is. Fits the Cokin P-series holder perfectly, comes in a really nice leatherette pouch. So much better than my screw-in ND filters, no vignetting at all. Can't wait to pick up a few more!

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
I have read about ND grads for years and have always meant to try them out. Now that I have I am very impressed! While you have to be careful to position the transition correctly, the results are excellent. I should have gotten them years ago!

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
I use this filter for landscape photography in front of my Canon 17-40 f4 and 24-105 f4 lenses. Great for sunrise and sunset photos with a 3 stop difference between the bright sky and dark foreground. The rectangular shape of this filter enables you to position it according to your needs. I was always frustrated with circular graduated neutral density filters, as they don't have that flexibility of placement. I am also impressed with the image quality as the filter doesn't degrade the image as compared to my previous ones. Great buy!

I used this filter to capture a sunset last night and the photographs are just beautiful! It prevented the colors from "washing out", which is why I bought it.

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
I've been using these filters for nearly 10 years and they've been probably the best addition to my landscape kit. The 3stop hard edge in particular has been a saver in a number of times, such as sunsets at the coast, flowers in shadow (foreground) with snow-capped sunlit mountain peaks in the background.

Yes, it's expensive. But this grad delivers great results that make people say "wow" when you show them the resulting pics. The filter I received appears flawless and has a very even grey cast.

Can't beat the quality. The extra length really helps when the horizon line is not in the middle of your photo. Galen Rowell new what he wanted and he got it.

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
This is the first ND filter I purchased for my DSLR. I used it specifically to help with sunset/sunrise pictures, where I had a high contrast difference within different portions of my image. This product has worked great for these purposes. There is no perceptible distortion of the image, and I am getting great shots. The flexibility of the holder to fine tune the placement of the ND section is key.

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
It is almost a must have for me when phtographing landscape. It is an excellent ND gad filter and I get consistently good result. I also have the Singh-Ray 2-stop hard and 3 stop soft filters. Since I have no side by side comparison with another brand, I can't say if other brand is comparable and just as good.
After years, I don't understand why Singh-Ray has not improved the filter storage, it is still a soft pocket. If any dirt get inside the pocket, it can scratch the filter.
