When the first color enhancing filters were introduced for outdoor photography (incorporating didymium glass) they did accentuate red and orange areas in fall foliage, sunsets, and similarly warm subjects. Often, however, there would be an overall megenta cast in the neutral, white, green, and lighter pastel shades of such scenes that many found objectionable. In 1995, the Singh-Ray Color Intensifier was introduced as a solution to this problem.

While it does not "pump" the red in a scene quite as much as earlier filters, the results are much more natural and believable (in part because more of the green is preserved). The cleaner rendering of neutral colors and whites is the strongest advantage of the Singh-Ray Intensifier. By selecting appropriate scenes and bracketing exposures, photographers can take advantage of the "natural" advantages of this filter. It is especially effective when the scene includes clouds, whitewater, gray rock, aspens, or other bright areas. You can also combine the Color Intensifier with any Singh-Ray Graduated Neutral Density Filter to give more "realistic" skies. Just be sure to adjust exposure by about 1-1/2 or 2 stops.

Singh-Ray's  Red, Blue, and Green Color Intensifiers offer targeted enhancement for specific objectives. Try the Red Color Intensifier for spring roses, fall foliage, or sunsets. Use the Blue Color Intensifier for skies, water, flowers and more. The Green Color Intensifier adds that something extra to nature's greenery for optimal results. Currently available as 77mm ring only. Singh-Ray offers the Polarizer Plus Color Intensifier that combines both polarizing and color intensification to enhance all colors yet render a more natural look for many outdoor scenes.

This filter measures 84 x 85mm and fits the Cokin P series holder.

Comments about Singh-Ray 84mm Color Intensifier Glass Filter - for Cokin P:

Hmmm the good side it does pretty much what the Singh-Ray site says it does. Reds, yellows and greens become more intense. When combined with a polariser you can achieve excellent colour saturation. It does amazing things to sunsets.

On the down side, the filter hammers your exposure by about two stops. Add a polariser and you are down about 3.5 stops, so a tripod or really intense lighting is needed.

Unlike Cokin filters, this product is made from glass. Of course, glass can be broken - and this is no different. It has to live in a rigid box (not the silly scratch-pouch that Singh-Ray supplies.) My filter barely fits the Cokin holder - it is perhaps a millimetre oversize - so that every time I install it I worry that it may slip from my fingers. I know one photographer who has experienced this.

My take is that if you're a purist and don't like adjusting the image in post processing, it's ok but I think the same effect can be achieved in Lightroom or Photoshop without spending an extra dime.
