Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjecetive as choosing a paint and brush.
The material is neutral and allows about 50% transmission.
This size is perfect for a 1-2 person head, or head-to-waist shot, or a 4x6 ft product setup.

I love the color and quality of light from this umbrella, I find it comparable to a softbox when used up close. It packs down small and lightweight. I have two and wouldn't hesitate to bring them on a shoot for their ease of use, light quality and compactness.

If you don't want to hassle with conventional umbrellas that have 8mm shafts and need to be mounted via the bracket on the side of the mono heads, these umbrellas are 7mm and slide through the center of Elinchrom heads.
One tip I found was to take a bar of soap and rub it along the umbrella shaft prior to the first use. It makes it a lot easier to install the umbrella into the strobe.
The light is soft and very natural.
