The 53" Midi Octa Light Bank bridges the gap between the 74" Octa Light Bank and 39" Rotalux Mini Octa. The Junior Octa features a rotating speed ring mount for exact angle positioning, spring loaded self-locking struts for fast, easy set-up, and durable snap fasteners to quickly attach the inner diffuser.
Like all Elinchrom light modifiers, the geometrics are precisely engineered to the focal length and light pattern unique to all Elinchrom flash heads.
Use this size for a full-length portrait, or a 3/4-length group portrait of 2 - 3 people.
Note: This light bank will fit only an Elinchrom head, or a Profoto Head with an optional adapter.

I've used this midi on many situations but after a few months the zipper (on case) came apart in chunks. The metal felt like was made cheaply and literally came apart in chunks like a cheap piece import from a dollar store. A few months later the rods went through and fabric, I had to have someone resew the fabric with a machine. It came with two extra rods but it's an irony that the extra pieces weren't used before the whole thing starting to break. For the price I could just buy about four or five 51" umbrellas.

Comments about Elinchrom Midi Octa Light Bank for Flash:
I purchased this softbox based on several recommendation from the Elinchrom user thread on POTN. My intention for the Midi Octa is for portrait work. I previously only had two small softboxes which did not create enough light for the look I wanted on people.
The sheer size of the modifier creates staggeringly beautiful light for close-up portraits (Think Head & Shoulders or closer) but it can absolutely work for 3/4 length or full-body shots as well.
The first time I tried to set up the octa I had some difficulty, the instructions included weren't terribly clear and it wasn't until AFTER I figured it out that everything made sense. Same issue with tearing it down. The instructions actually don't even cover this part. (Tip: press down on the speed-ring with one hand and press down on the metal rib with the other, this will loosen the tension enough for you to release the collar)
All-in-all I am absolutely pleased with this purchase, and I will happily recommend it to anyone with an Elinchrom lighting system!
(Note: I am using this modifier with BXRi 500 lights)

Comments about Elinchrom Midi Octa Light Bank for Flash:
I know 53" is just about 4-1/2 ft but when you actually have it in your room/studio, this thing is HUGE! My studio is 11 ft by 22 ft and this light bank really stands out in it. However, in the end it fits and provides great soft light. The lining of the octa bank is silver and it actually has 2 diffusers...an inner one as well as the outer one, if you really need extra diffused light for your situation. Just know that putting this together is quite challenging as you have to bend 8 steel rods to form the shape and that's not easy to do by yourself when you have to keep the center ring of the light bank around the outside of the speed ring. I managed to get 7 rods in place but the 8th was impossible to do alone so I got help from my girlfriend. The only downside is that I'm not inclined to ever want to dismantle it. The only real complaint I have is that for some reason the grooves don't line up cleanly so it's a bit challenging getting it connected to my Elinchrom 500 BX-Ri strobe. That's the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

Love the size and quality. Comes with a nice bag. I like how Elinchrom uses the velcro attachments just in a few areas (effectively!) instead of all around the entire thing like other manufacturers.

I picked up the BXRI 500 and this Octa. Excellent light output from this softbox. Looking forward to some nice portraits soon.
Tried it out with full length body shot and this bad boy handles it no problem. Good build, easy to put together and take down, feels like a quality product.

I've been very satisfied with it's performance so far. The initial assembly was a struggle involving clamps, but has gotten easier as I have gotten more familiar with the set up and things have loosened up.. If you take this on location make sure you have assembled it a few times.

Comments about Elinchrom Midi Octa Light Bank for Flash:
I had been using two portable soft boxes which came with a lighting kit from Elinchrom for my small home studio when I decided that I needed something more than a head and shoulders set-up. I looked at lots and lots of light modifiers and decided that soft gentle light was my perfered medium. I chose Elinchrom largely based on the performance of the equipment I already owned. From what I've seen so far it was a very good decision. This light bank, although large, does fit in my home studio (think large den size.) It enables me to do whole body portraits with ease. It has a deflector immediately in front of the bulb, a silver lining and two softening panels. With just the deflector and the silver umbrella, it works as a large beauty light. As diffusion panels are added, the light softens and scatters to an almost shadowless condition. I had been concerned that my Elinchorm De-Lite 4 would not be suffficient as the light source but this has not proven to be the case. My only complaints are that the included instructions for assembly are awful and the rod from the deflector which inserts into the light body to hold the deflector in place lost its friction fit almost immediately.

Comments about Elinchrom Midi Octa Light Bank for Flash:
Great great great spread of light, and oh so smoothly it evens the models face out. I use it for portraits, headshots and defiantly full body. It covers it all. Comes with a case and is easy to travel with. But if you dont have strong hands/fingers you might need someone to help you put it up. But it is great. Big but sterdy. If you are lookign for something that spreads the light and smoothens your subject. Go ahead and get this. I looooove it.

I use this modifier with an Elinchrom Ranger RX and what a great combination it is. The light the modifier produced was soft and beautiful (with internal & external diffusers on). Used it outdoors on a slightly windy day (pity the assistant that was holding on to it)and its sturdy construction held up for the duration of the shoot. A must-have modifier.
