The Crown Audio SASS-P MKII Microphone is a stereo PZM microphone designed for classic ensemble, concerts, electronic news gathering, crowd ambiance, theater and sound effect recording. The microphone's dual capsule design features two Pressure Zone Microphones with human-head-sized spacing between them creating well focused stereo imaging without a "gap" in the middle spectrum. A foam barrier baffle located between the capsules maintain accurate focus and limits phase cancellation when switched to mono.

The SASS can be powered using 9 Volt batteries, as well as 12-48V phantom power. The SASS offers a wide frequency response of 20Hz to 18kHz and a sonic character best described as smooth and warm with emphasis on high frequencies providing an "airy" quality on output.

Comments about Crown Audio SASSP-MK2 Microphone:

Just to clear up one thing, B & H's description of this mic as having "switchable patterns" is not correct. Rather, it tends to have omni pickup at lower frequencies, and the baffle creates directionality at higher frequencies. That said, it sounds very good, with exceptional stereo imaging (especially when heard over headphones--it comes close to sounding like a binaural dummy head system).

I would not rate the sound quality of the SASSP-Mk2 as highly as the best stereo microphones made by Schoeps, Royer and others, but it is competitive in its price range. Also, as it can be battery powered and comes with an effective wind screen, it is possible to use it for field recording of stereo sound effects, ambience, etc. The main drawback of this mic is its large size, which makes it conspicuous in concert recording situations, and requires a large carry case for transport. However, it is not heavy, so at least it won't strain your back.
