Comments about Avalon Design ST-4 - Matching Spare Tube Kit for VT Series:
Officially recommended by Avalon as replacement tubes, they are actually Electro-Harmonix. The original Sovtek tubes are no longer made. If you are happy with the stock 737sp sound, go with this tube kit. Others online swear by upgrading to premium tubes which have a considerably higher cost. I more likely would have tried that considering these are not exact replacement tubes anyway.

I didn't realize what a difference the new tubes would make. It's like I have a brand new toy!

I needed to bring my Avalon 737 back to factory specs since the unit was designed for this brand of tube. I am happy with the results.

Comments about Avalon Design ST-4 - Matching Spare Tube Kit for VT Series:
well, when I bought the replacement kit for the valves, I wasn't really shure if I needed them. Indeed, My VT737 worked fine, I just felt that the usual silky in your face sound was lightly kind of "smeared" so I decided to buy the kit.
The valves are different frand from the original ones, (electroarmonix vs. sovtek) but as they're sold by the manufacturer (and supposely biased) I didn't care about that. The box is indeed big especially compared to the weight of it. It was very well padded, and the valves really did the long journey to home very comfortably. Once I changed the valves... oah! inmediately the sound caracteristic of the preamp was obviously better (as opposed to what I supposed the change would be) the sound is now incredibly solid and the proof of that is that now in the studio, the avalon (again) wins in comparison with lots of other pres in almost any kind of sound sources.
for so little money, worth having a spare kit just to test...
