The ART Pro Channel Microphone Preamplifier is a multi-purpose tool enclosed in a two rack space chassis and features three independent circuits - a tube-based analog preamplifier, a VCA-less compressor switchable between optical or variable-mu control element and a semi-parametric, four-band, tube-based equalizer.

The circuitry is a hybrid design utilizing solid-state and tube technology. A transformerless design helps the Pro Channel maintain good signal integrity and exhibits extremely low noise. Although the order of the circuits can be changed utilizing the insert points, normally the compressor circuit follows the preamplifier and the equalizer follows the compressor. While the preamplifier is always active, the compressor and equalizer may be individually bypassed.

The compression circuit of the Pro Channel features a VCA-less design and utilizes either optical or variable-mu dual triode electronics for superior musical performance. The compressor is soft knee by design, and although it is capable of providing a thoroughly "squashed" signal, it was designed to excel in areas where transparent and musical dynamics control is desired.

The four-band tube-based equalizer was designed to help "fix" the instruments that provide the most headaches when recording. Two sweepable parametric bands and selectable shelving bands overlap each other providing the ultimate in flexibility. The Pro Channel features balanced XLR and unbalanced 1/4" inputs and outputs. The 1/4" input is perfect for DI or line level applications and overall the unit was designed to work seamlessly with any recording, sound-reinforcement or electronic instrument setup.

Comments about ART Pro Channel Microphone Preamplifier:

This is a great unit for the money... versatile and effective. The tubes add a genuine warmth to the audio. This product does, however, live up to its reputation of being noisy, but I have lessened that by adjusting it to its sweetest spot and am able to eliminate the most of the rest in post production. B&H processed the order quickly and efficiently and it was in my studio and operating four days. Thanks!

Comments about ART Pro Channel Microphone Preamplifier:

This is a well built quality peice of equipment.
Keep in mind this is not a magic box that will make your recording sound any better than the quality of the source ( its not gonna make you sing better ) . However it has enough control to balance out shortcommings of lower end microphones or make a great mic sound even better. If used correctly the preamp is warm and quiet, the compressor can be transparent or pushed for fairly dramatic results,
the eq section is limited but sufficient to
correct a mic that is to dark or bright. If you take the time to get your settings correct, this will definitely improve your sound quality.
