The ART Pro Channel Microphone Preamplifier is a multi-purpose tool enclosed in a two rack space chassis and features three independent circuits - a tube-based analog preamplifier, a VCA-less compressor switchable between optical or variable-mu control element and a semi-parametric, four-band, tube-based equalizer.
The circuitry is a hybrid design utilizing solid-state and tube technology. A transformerless design helps the Pro Channel maintain good signal integrity and exhibits extremely low noise. Although the order of the circuits can be changed utilizing the insert points, normally the compressor circuit follows the preamplifier and the equalizer follows the compressor. While the preamplifier is always active, the compressor and equalizer may be individually bypassed.
The compression circuit of the Pro Channel features a VCA-less design and utilizes either optical or variable-mu dual triode electronics for superior musical performance. The compressor is soft knee by design, and although it is capable of providing a thoroughly "squashed" signal, it was designed to excel in areas where transparent and musical dynamics control is desired.
The four-band tube-based equalizer was designed to help "fix" the instruments that provide the most headaches when recording. Two sweepable parametric bands and selectable shelving bands overlap each other providing the ultimate in flexibility. The Pro Channel features balanced XLR and unbalanced 1/4" inputs and outputs. The 1/4" input is perfect for DI or line level applications and overall the unit was designed to work seamlessly with any recording, sound-reinforcement or electronic instrument setup.
