Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Yes, it cracks. It's brittle plastic. But it works. And it's a lot better than no hood. And the only other choice, a cheaper non-Nikon product is probably worse. So choose this one or the cheaper knock-off. But it's essential to use s hood, I think. So, not much choice. (USED on 12-24 f4) Buying a 2nd one, will try to glue the first one to have a spare.

I have now broken three HB-23s. There are two weak spots in the HB-23: two of the four places where the outer shade dips down to a low point between "petals", coincide with some sort of slot in the inner ring of the bayonet attachment. There is very little plastic material at these two points and it doesn't take much of a blow to produce a crack and then the hood will not stay attached to either the 12-24 or the 17-35.
Also, the hood gets knocked off the lens fairly easily. I have had at least 30 Nikon lenses over the years, and I always use a hood. I have never had this problem with any of the other hoods. Therefore, you may lose it before it breaks.
If/when my current hood breaks, I am going to try one of the third party hoods. I doubt that they could be worse, and at least they cost less.

I always try to use lens hoods and this is my third one for the 17-35mm lens. I seem to have a problem breaking them.
No problems with the hood itself.

Outdoors in bright sun, cuts down on lateral glare.

Lightweight and very thin = fragile. Would be nice to be made out of metal.

Comments about Nikon HB-23 Bayonet Lens Hood:
The functionality of this lens hood is somewhat limited because you can't really have much of a hood on a lens that runs down to 16. It's incredibly thin, and therefore somewhat fragile. It of course looks good on the lense, does provide SOME cover and SOME protection, so it's ok. No problems just somewhat limited and somewhat fragile. It would make sense to beef up something this thin with a material stronger than plastic, would make it a much better product.

Comments about Nikon HB-23 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I bought a used 16-35mm f/4 and the seller sent me the wrong lens hood. He credited me a fair price, so I bought the genuine Nikon part as a replacement. If you need a replacement hood for one of these Nikon lenses, I recommend this part.

Comments about Nikon HB-23 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I needed a replacement for the hood from my 16-35mm F4 Nikkor lens, which isn't listed as a compatible lens, but it is. The last one I had saved my lens from smashing into a rock, shattering the hood, but keeping the lens safe. Definately worth the few extra dollars for Nikon quality.

Product is made of high quality material. It helps prevent sun glare but most importantly, it protects your lens.
This hood looks really big for the lens but it helps when you are walking around and going into tight areas.

Use this with my 17-35. Accidentally stepped on the original and broke it, and I like it enough to order another, so obviously I think it is worth having on my lens.
