The first week I shot my potted cactus. Inside, outside, wide open, stopped down to f32, up close for full 1:1 or back aways for a more artistic portrait shot. Having never shot macro before, I was surprised at how close you can get to your object. Remember... minimum focus distance is to the sensor-not the end of the lens! The images themselves were great... even the corners were sharp... my talent for art... not so sharp.
The second week I wandered around the house grabbing stuff left and right for up close and personal shots. Model cars-check. Southwest pottery-check. Sewing machine-check. Embroidered wall hangings-check. I can't look anywhere without seeing a photo-op! This lens awakens your creative juices.
The third week has started with me using it with the Kenko extension tubes on things like salt, oregano, cactus spines and oil paintings. I've also done some non-macro portraits of my girlfriend. (But you should see her fingernails!) I never knew salt was little cubes.

I'm shooting everything on a tripod - I use a tripod more than most folks, so the need for one for macro doesn't bother me one bit - I'm used to it. I can see how depending on your tripod head you might want the tripod collar for it - its not a 35mm prime! I use a Manfrotto 460 MG and it droops after tightening... 1mm may not show when shooting the mountains, but at macro you miss half your image. I can compensate or spring for the $150+ collar... this lens is worth putting every penny you have into using it!

Also, when getting low to the ground, I can see where a right angle view finder will come in handy... another item in the wishlist!

I use it on a 450D, haven't even tried the AF yet-probably never will. I'm a manual focuser all the way. Focuses very smoothly - better than all my other lenses. (my other lenses are 35mm 2.0, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8 & the 200mm 2.8L)

If you are at all interested in macro - buy this lens. If you think you might be interested in macro - buy this lens-you will be! Fun per dollar over a whole year is only $1.40 a day... a steal! This lens may be what makes me upgrade to a full frame camera...

Having been a user of various Macro/Micro lenses over many years as a Professional, I can fairly state that although this still does rank among the best available in the 50-100mm range, I feel that it is no longer the best option available to Canon Macro enthusiasts. This is coming from someone who covets an extensive range of incomparable Canon L series lenses! Having recently been in the position of being able to compare an array of modern Macro lenses side by side, (with fellow club members in Japan) I feel that it doesn't hold a candle to two of the new Sigma models. The 70mm f2.8 and 150mm f2.8 ! Both of them floor it with regards to bokeh, and in the area of extremely fast focus and superb color rendition. I never thought I'd say this, but in this case, Canon has a little catching-up to do. It just seems a little dated against these two phenomenal lenses. One important point to remember if you do go ahead and purchase this lens, is not to bother buying the totally useless accessory tripod adapter ring. It comes with an inner plastic sleeve to fit it to this particular lens, but all it does is jam & jerk whilst being turned! It feels absolutely third-rate, and is a total waste of money! A very good lens, but in this case can be bettered at the price. (I went for the Sigma 150mm f2.8 Macro to replace my current Canon 180mm f3.5 Macro. Believe me, it's that good!)

Expertise: 37 years as a working pro in various areas of wildlife & nature photography

Problems Encountered: That absolutely awful accessory tripod ring!

I enjoy doing macro photography and this lens is perfect for that. The only mistake I made in purchasing this lens is that I bought in in the winter. I can not wait for the flowers and butterflies to come back. I am using this on a Rebel T1i(500D) and was looking to possibly buying the EF-S 60mm. I'm glad I bought the 100mm. The extra working distance is great and if and when I purchase a full-frame camera I can continue to use this lens that I love. I have used this lens with the 500D close-up lens to get closer focus and this works very well. If you love macro this is a great lens to have. It has been even more fun than I had imagined it would be.

I knew I wanted this lens from reading articles. It hasn't disappointed me. Rather than upgrading my camera (a Canon XS) I opted to upgrade the glass. I can do it in steps. This was my first step along with a 17-40mm L lense. Why lenses first? Because I haven't been able to make up my mind on a camera body yet. I'm considering a 7D, a 3Ti and a 5D. Still struggling with that, but It gives me time to work on my glass. Probably by summer I will know better which I want, however, I am finding the better glass is doing a lot more for me than the camera body might. There are some great capabilities in these cameras, but I just have to decide how much I want to spend and which capabilities I really want.

I've had this lens for about a week now, and right out of the box I did some sharpness testing and wow! This is a fantastic lens all around. Wide open it's extremely sharp, so much so that I didn't really notice much of an improvement stopping down. I am using it on a 7d right now, so I'm not sure exactly how the corners fare on a full frame, but so far so good. I think the only reason that you would spring the extra $ for the "L" version is if you absolutely need IS. To me it's not worth double the price so this is my lens. In terms of sharpness, everything else I've used on a DSLR pales by comparison. If you need a macro GET THIS LENS!

Comments about Canon Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens:

I have had this lens for a couple weeks, and with the few times I have used it, I have gotten some amazing results. It has incredible sharpness, and at f/2.8, an amazing depth of field. One thing to note: If you are getting this for amazing close up shots, you best have a tripod ready. It is almost impossible to hold it steady with your hands and get a clear image. However it is still amazing for things like Portraits. I would reccomend this to fellow photographers!

Comments about Canon Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens:

I tickled with the idea of buying the 100mm f/2.8 L USM Macro instead of this beautiful girl, but it's price and familiarity had me sold.

I've been renting this lens once or twice a month since August, so I decided it was time to purchase it.

A ring flash is definitely on my "to-next-buy" list as you do require an incredible amount of light to take pictures up close.

Comments about Canon Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens:

I have had this lens for a few years and had a chance to compare it to the L version (owned by my brother). I was unable to tell the difference between the two lenses and the IS on the L isn't particularly effective in macro mode.

This has to be one of the sharpests lenses Canon makes. If you want boken and don't need macro, then the 85mm may be a better choice.

Comments about Canon Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens:

This is probably the best Macro Lens under $500. Sometimes it gets confused while trying to focus. Depth of field is very shallow measured at f32 at minimum focus. No lens hood.
