What can you say? It's a molded piece of plastic with some black felt glued inside. And it's priced so predictably (and ridiculously) high that it's in line with Canon's price schedule. All of Canon's small, non-essential accessories are overpriced.
But of course this hood fulfills a purpose; it helps protect the front element, which, on the 100mm Macro is quite close to the front edge of the unit. I know photogs that never use hoods; I know others that won't shoot without them. Personally I like them for outdoor work, and because I envision using this Macro lens outdoors I bought it.
So it protects the front element somewhat. As for blocking stray light and diminishing flare, I suppose it must help, though any flare problems I've ever had were unavoidable aspects of those particular shots.
I give it 5 stars because it fits perfectly, unlike the less expensive (but still overpriced) 3rd party hoods. Aside from the quality of the plastic, which is high, there are no other mechanical points to consider; it either fits correctly or it doesn't. All other aspects of its function follows its form, hence the 5 stars.

Unfortunately, the length of this hood is longer than the focusing distance for 1:1 macros. I don't use this hood when taking life-size macros on the 100mm f/2.8.

Three versions of 100mm macros from Canon -- the ET67 fits the lens made after 2000 -- called CSR at B&H - within 3 minutes had the RMA in my inbox -- no hassle -- no worry -- done --

The hood does what it's meant to do. Wish it would come included with the lens though. It has a good finish all around. Should last a long time.

This lens hood fits my canon 2.8 100 macro perfectly. As with all the other canon lens hoods I have it has the non-reflective inner coating.

In Canada this product cost like $40 more, This is a great way to protect your lens from pollen etc. It is too bad Canon's lens caps are so difficult to take on or off with the lens hood on.

It does it's job so I guess that's good. It doesn't easily snap onto my lense and I was not able to put it over my UV filter but it was inexpensive so can't complain!

Ok, I am used to having lens hoods for all my lenses, and I am also used to be included with my lens purchase, currently this is my only non L, lens.
apart from (obviously) shielding your lens from glare, hoods are pretty good at protecting your front element, being a macro, it is usually closer to your subjects, so this becomes very impotant.
I always buy Canon glass, so I always buy Canon Accesories

Plastic with felt lining. Nice fit on the lens and it helps reduce the possibility of flare as expected. Also helps protect the front element to a degree.

For me, a lens hood is not an option. I can't afford to let outside light influence my image...ever. Better to be safe and always use a lens hood.
