Canon's final no-compromise 35mm flagship SLR, the magnesium alloy Canon EOS-1V is a benchmark in professional 35mm SLR camera history.  It has a lightning-fast autofocus system with 45 AF points that can be customized to the needs of the user.  Seven super-sensitive cross sensors detect vertical as well as horizontal lines of subjects, and the central sensor works even with working apertures as low as f/8, so that you'll retain autofocus function using f/4 lenses with 2X teleconverters.  The EOS-1V is made in Japan to the highest possible manufacturing standards, and its shutter is specified to withstand 150,000 cycles (>4000 36-exposure rolls of film).

The EOS-1V's control layout shares the lineage of the original EOS-1, and users of the 1, 1N, & 3 will find the operation intuitive.  The EOS-1V's sealing is the best in Canon's 35mm SLR history; together with "L" telephoto lenses, one can shoot in the worst of conditions.  The 100% accurate glass pentaprism viewfinder is as bright and contrasty as any autofocus camera, and custom functions allow personalizaton of autofocus, metering, operating systems, etc.  You can also link the EOS-1V to a PC for transfer of data and remote control operation.

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

I went backwards in time. First I had a Canon 1DS MKII (and it works perfectly 5 years after the purchase) then I thought about a possible backup camera. It was the Canon 1V. Since then I use the film camera a bit more than the digital one because I like the film feeling better than the digital. This camera is perfect and I can use all the EOS lenses on it (including the immage stabilizatored lenses)as well as any other accessories like flashes, remote exposure unit, filters, etc. It's reliability is very good (made for pros), fast and easy to use. It's a perfect backup camera in all cases (eg wedding photography). The 10 frame/sec multiple exposure speed is more than enough for practicaly all purposes. And THIS IS A CAMERA NOT A VIDEO UNIT!!!

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

I obtained my first camera by winning it on the carnival midway at the American Indian Exposition in 1959. There've been a few cameras between then and now, but never one of this stature. I justified its cost by noting that it is the last film camera I will ever buy, and the best of the breed by any reasonable definition. It will allow me to enjoy using film (especially B&W) and it will someday belong to my daughter, who shares my interest in photography. If you think that you'll regret missing this boat when it sails, and you can afford it, just buy it. It will hold its value well if you decide to sell it later.

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

You can never go wrong with this camera. It will be with you forever. Only thing I am going to say is that the price is a little steep, but if you can afford it then do it. If you like film, need a camera, and have the money, you won't regret this one--so long as you like Canon.

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

If you shoot film, this is the camera to use. I'll echo the other reviews about the ruggedness, feel, etc.

I'm a nature photographer, mostly shooting landscapes and macro florals, selling prints at exhibits.

I've been using the wonderful 5d Mark II for the convenience, but when I compose an image that I might want to use professionally, I always pull out the 1V. The difference in image quality needs to be seen to be fully appreciated, particularly with L-series lenses.

Developing and scanning film is an effort and expense, but the investment is worth it for your best images. I print images from 35mm up to 16x24 inches and they show marvelous detail and tonal range.

For larger prints, I use my 4x5 view camera.

I purchased all my equipment at B&H. Based on my experience with them, I stopped comparison shopping a long time ago.

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

I started photography late in my life and I have been shooting digital until I was attracted by some photos of my kids that were taken with a film camera. I decided to get a good film camera. After reading reviews about this camera, I decided to buy a used one as I could not afford a new one.
I can not stress this enough, this is the best camera one can hold. Its design can not be even compared to the digital gear I am using today.
The pictures are stunningly sharp, the auto focus is very fast and accurate.

I like this camera so much that I have not used my digital camera(Canon 7D) for months now.
I will recommend this camera, it is the best film camera ever made.

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

Definitely the Best film camera you can get from Canon.
The construction is incredible with its magnesium alloy body, weather proof seals on all buttons.

The auto-focus is the fastest I ever got to use, and once coupled with L-series lens, you get the best combinaison body/lens possible.

Even so I've got a digital body, I've kept my 1V-HS and I'm planning to go through some more films with it, because shooting with this beast is really something else!

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

This is the flagship of Canon's film camera line.
The digital cameras they make today incorporate the features pioneered by this fine camera body.
Multiple Focus Points, Autofocus, Evaluative metering, etc. The EOS-1V had these features first!

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

Film is alive and well in my world. Digital has millions of pixels (MP), but a 35mm frame has billions of grains of metallic silver, following development. Speaking as a physicist, this is 3 orders of magnitude more resolution and there's no catching up because digital file sizes would be gigantic if you had billions of pixels.

I certainly enjoy digital, especially my 50D! It's a wonderful technology, but it doesn't replace film any more than digital synthesizers can replace the grand pianos in Symphony Hall.

While it is true digital rigs incorporate advanced technology, film is also extremely advanced! Nothing less than a triumph in chemistry and material science! Many artists are unaware of the incredible refinement one finds in a can of film. (live and learn) It's not a simple matter to finely calibrate chemical reactions so they match light intensity, and color temperature.

I have no good reasons for buying the EOS1v! An EOS3 has most of the features, and my EOS1N is a similar design. At least, that is what you'd think looking at the outside, or using the controls.

As it happens, there is a world of difference under the hood. The EOS1v incorporates a 32-bit RISC Processor, and a CMOS sensor with about 10K pixels to operate the AF system, which will track subjects moving at 30 mph while shooting at 9 frames per second.

Personally, I'm very happy with the body out of the box (3 FPS without motor drive) and have not put on the PB-E2. I think this is the best 35mm camera in performance terms, and obvious refinement. Getting 10 FPS by any means is a huge technical accomplishment. It's also weather proof, and dust proof.

A very important feature is the viewing system. You see 100 percent of your subject! This is quite important for many kinds of photography, notably close-up photography.

My EOS1V catalog is 32 pages long, and wouldn't repeat the content here--but it is extremely impressive technology, especially in matters of mechanical engineering (film transport, mirror box operation, moving parts of all kinds). The shutter is good for 150,000 clicks! Not too shabby at all! The list of features just goes on and on--but the camera is not over-engineered and seems to understate it's formidable capabilities.

We should not fail to mention this rig will hold your film absolutely flat. Easier said than done!

What a rig! By the way, for those interested in trivia, the "v" is the letter v, NOT the roman numeral five. V stands for "Vision" according to Canon's 1v catalog. How silly can you get!

If you've got the bucks, this is one beautiful camera, a description I use sparingly.

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

Canon 1V is one of the masterpiece for more than a decade. It is solidly built. The heavy body is not suitable for everybody. It is suitable either the professional and photo enthusiast. I bought this body purpose is to mount on my 70 -200mm f/2.8 tele lens when my LEICA M6 and M9 not support the tele lens. When I travel, I only bring the Leica M6 or M9 due to compact size. For landscape, 1V no doubt is a strong tool,. I also impressed that film: Fuji Velvia is much better than digital for serious enlargement.

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

I'm surprised that there aren't more reviews on this camera, but it's likely because of a simple reason: it's a film camera and it does what it's supposed to do without generating any complaints from the user.

I woke up a few months ago, and realized that I had been taking slide photos professionally for over 10 years. It also occurred to me that I deserved a better camera body than the one I had been using. So I bought a used 1V with a PB-E2 drive booster.

The camera feels like holding a solid brick, but I actually enjoy this new weight. (My old body feels like a toy in comparison.) The viewfinder is very bright and provides 100% coverage, weatherproofing is great, and the drive mechanism provides a very satisfying sound when the shutter button is pushed.

Overall, the camera is a pleasure to use. The controls are well-placed; the ergonomics are exceptional. I've only noticed two minor issues:

                                  1. Unfortunately, the software used to set personal functions does not work on modern computers (it only works on Windows 98 or Mac OS 9). For the most part, I have no interest in adjusting the personal functions, but I did notice one that I would really like to change: disabling the rear scroll wheel for exposure compensation adjustments. Sometimes I turn the wheel by mistake and I inadvertently change the exposure settings. If I could disable this via the personal function, I'd be happy to hold down the '+/-' button and adjust the compensation with the index-finger scroll wheel.

                                  2. Sometimes the auto-focus has problems on high-density, periodic structures like radiator heat exchangers, old-school car grills, cloth speaker covers, etc etc. However, in most situations, the auto focus is solid and very quick.

I enjoy using this camera, and I hope that Canon is working on its one-day successor. I still believe in film, and I hope to use this camera body for many years to come.

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

I bought a 1vhs from b&h used 18 months ago - was worried about potential outcomes but turned out to be a great move and saved some bucks. Camera is as advertised and has been flawless performer. I agree with the previous reviews totally and find this camera and selected film applications to be truly special. The build quality and feel of the camera is superior to my 5d and 40d even with battery packs, even though those cameras are very good. Rock solid with very smooth control functions and best ergonomics of all - I call it the brick (it does have heft but in a good way). One of the most satisfying aspects is the sound of the shutter. Magic. I use b&w negative and velvia 50 films, and have captured some of my fav photos even after making the move to digital 4 years ago. L lenses are fantastic with this camera. 3 of my top 10 favorite family portraits are with tri-x film and this camera and natural light. I display some of my photos in my office, and people are amazed at the quality of the "antiques"

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

I started shooting photos in high school using black and white film. Photography has always been a hobby of mine and in the last few years I have switched to digital - Canon 5D. I like how easy digital is from a work-flow perspective, but it just isn't film... So, about a year ago I decided that since I already had a nice Canon outfit I would go ahead and buy a film body to "go retro". I could not be happier with that decision.

I love my 5D, but I was absolutely amazed at how amateur it felt when compared to the EOS-1v. The "five" as I call it just feels like a better camera when you hold it. I can not say enough about how well the auto focus works - I have never seen a camera with better speed and accuracy in the auto focus.

The "five" is better sealed than my 5D as well, and the buttons and controls have a more durable feel to them when compared to the 5D.

I use the "five" for black and white photos and shooting Fuji Velvia 50 as well as Kodachrome 64. There is a local shop that can process the E6 slides, but the Kodachrome has to be sent out for processing. I have had spectacular results with both the Fuji and Kodachrome, and the "real" B&W shots are awesome as well.

You need L glass or high quality prime lenses to take full advantage of this camera. The L lenses have better IS motors and generally faster focusing motors. This camera will outperform cheap lenses, so don't go cheap on the glass.

Best example of what this camera can do that I simply cant do with other digital systems: capture 10+ frames of a golfer in the tee box, crystal clear stop action (shutter 1/2000th) of the deflection of the club at the top of swing, stop action of the club face hitting the ball, stop action of the ball deforming on the club face, and a stop action of the ball deforming in the other direction after leaving the club face.

All of that in vivid rich color with none of the scene highlights or background blown out (Velvia 50)

And an amateur like myself only had to line up, set shutter priority, and press the button to capture the series....

I also have spectacular family photos of my children "at play" using Kodachrome, so this camera is not just for professional use.

If you enjoy photography as a hobby, especially if you still enjoy shooting film, I highly recommend this camera.

Comments about Canon EOS-1V Camera Body:

I've owned the "V" as I affectionately call it since 2005 and it has taken:

The image used by one of the best-known New York labs for it's customer service department's 2007 Christmas card

Two shots that a London photojournalist friend used on the cover of his latest book

About 40 pictures to illustrate two travel articles articles I've written and one currently "under construction" and

The photos in my first exhibit, which will be in December 2008. All that has taken "us" to the Far East, aboard cargo ships and outside in New York blizzards for hours and let's not forget through numerous airports and on and off many flights, and never missed a beat.

The difference in this rig and any other I've used is that the "V" lets me just worry about finding shots I want, knowing they'll be as good as they can be. I've really gotten to love the way the controls are set up too -- if you haven't used a Canon pro rig before, it took some getting used to, but it's not at all hard.

My bottom line -- if you want to take your photography as far as you can, this is the body that you should try and get a hold of. Yes, I'll go digital at some point, but for now, this is still the only rig that gives you 10 frames a second (it's worth adding the booster so you can do that) -- and NO autofocus issues!! And the photos it takes are great too.

One final point -- when you add L lenses and the 580 EXII Speedlight, you feel the weight around your neck. An Op/Tech USA neck strap helps tremendously.
