I enjoy trying macro photography, so I bought this to use my with Digital Rebel XT and EF 50mm Macro lens so that I could take macro shots easier since light can be a real problem (especially if you want anything other than a very shallow depth of field).
It's pretty easy to use, and has a great output. The ability to detach the ring and move it off the lens to get light from a different direction is very useful. That's not exactly a designed in feature (since you're expected to keep it on the lens) but it works. It's so nice to be able to shoot macro shots hand-held with I'm not in direct sunlight. Control over shadows is great too. It's fast enough that I don't have to worry about it, at least for the first few shots.
In using it for other general (non-macro) uses it has done a very good job. I've taken a few great shots of my dog (from a short distance) and other objects in situations that didn't have quite enough ambient lighting. It certainly works better than the built-in flash (which is all I have since I don't own any other external flash units), producing softer shadows and more evenly illuminated subjects. Portrait type shots look great since the even light helps fill in all the wrinkles and such.
Despite the look, a few more buttons (or buttons that are at least a little less recessed) would be nice. Cycling through it's little menu can be a tad annoying due to the options and depth of press required to trigger the keys. Letting the camera body control everything would be a real benefit too, due to simplicity and improved controls. The biggest con I can see is the cord between the flash and body is rather stiff. When the ring is rotated 90 degrees it has a tendency to try to shift a little off horizontal due to the cord's tension. I figure this will easy with use and time. I could complain about the depth of field preview effect (lots of little flashes, doesn't last very long) or the focus assist light (brighter would be very helpful... but the lens isn't fast at AF in the first place) but those aren't major problems.
I'd definitely buy it again.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:
I'm using this flash with my Canon 7D and a 60mm EFS macro lens. With this lens it fits perfectly with no adapter and it works great. Recently brought it to a fly tying show and was able to get remarkable closeups of flies with perfect lighting, no highlight blowouts, and great color replication without shadows. It even did extremely well on portrait pictures of the fly tyers. It is well constructed and syncs perfectly with the 7D providing ideally balanced lighting every time.

This is a great piece of kit, and has the quality feel of a Canon product.
I have only one problem, that you can't attach the ring flash if the lens has a filter on it.
One more issue is that when photographing anything reflective, such as a bugs eyes you can see flash reflected in the eyes.
Otherwise, it is a great product!

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:
the light is awsome BUT its not clear at point of sale about requiring adaptor ring to mount onto your lense..especially when it is mentioned that this light is great with the 100mm macro L series lense (but does not fit on without adaptor) a trap for young players

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:
I originally bought the Metz ringlight due to price, past history of quality and wireless but I could not get it to sync with my Canon 7D as a slave so I called B&H and they immediately allowed me to return and exchange it for the MR-14EX. This flash works great. The E-TTL works great and you also have full manual controls for both of the flash bulbs and yes it can be a setup as a slave as well. I like my 580 more as it is more powerful and provides the ability to use most anywhere but it is not good for macro. The MR14EX is pricey but if you want no headaches and power with a lot of flexibility this is the flash for you. It would be nice if it went up to 77mm lens diameter instead of the 72mm limit.

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:
Great for macro and very versatile use for other purposes as well. Ability to manage the light direction and power is very useful and provides a wide range of composition choices. Needed to attach to Tamron 90mm and called B&H and got immediate support for the right ring adapters to make it work. Very impressive.

Very reliable ring flash. Useful for my job in dentistics. Four stars due to a higher price than desirable! If you have a Canon MAcro 100mm, don´t forget the 67 Adaptor !!!

Comments about Canon MR-14EX TTL Macro Ring Lite Flash:
I brought this along with the Canon 100mm 2.8f USM lens. I'm new to macro photography so I'm not an expert in this field. However this is a great piece of kit, and has the quality feel of a Canon product.
I have only two issues, one is that you can't attach the ring flash if the lens has a filter on it. I like to have UV filters on all my lenses to protect the main lens. But then the flash has a deep recess, so that will protect the lens when attached.
The other is that when photographing anything reflective - such as a bugs eyes - you get the imprint of the flash rings, some people like this, I tend to get around it by hand holding the flash ring.
That aside, it's another great product
