I use the Canon VL-3 with my Canon HD camcorder. The light was not designed to illuminate the entire room, but rather to provide enough additional light to make the video acceptable. There are times when inside light appears to be sufficient, but when looking at the video, there is grain due to the lack of sufficient light. The VL-3 provides enough diffused light to reduce or eliminate the grain. The Canon VL-3 is well-built and it's small, partly due to the fact that it uses the camcorder's battery rather than its own.I use a larger battery for my camcorder. Therefore, I can use the light for longer periods of time, before the battery needs recharging. As mentioned in the Review Headline, this light works as advertised, and I am satisfied with its performance.[...]

Not a very good on camera light. It is alright but doesn't do much at all (only 3 Watts) and is barely better than my HV30's onboard light. If I ever were to use it, however, I would not (with my current setup) be able to with my Rode VideoMic at the time time as there is only one hotshoe. My advice to you is that if you seriously want an on-camera light, go for a more expensive and powerful model.

Comments about Canon VL-3 On-Camera 3 Watt Video Light:
I use this light on the Canon HV40 camcorder during wedding receptions. It is bright enough to shoot in very low light situations, but doesn't blind people when they see it. Plus, it doesn't drain the battery. I own two of them and the price has significantly dropped since the first one I bought. I would recommend this to anybody with a camera that has the Canon smart shoe accessory.

Comments about Canon VL-3 On-Camera 3 Watt Video Light:
I tried using the light for a reception hall taping but instead was lucky enough for the couple to be dancing in the spotlight the whole time. It is not as strong as a headlamp, but for the price it is cheap. I got what I paid for.

Indoor filming so much better as well as outdoor night projects. Easy to use. I purchased product after 3years, big mistake should have done it sooner. Great addition to canon ZR70

Comments about Canon VL-3 On-Camera 3 Watt Video Light:
I used it at a wedding yesterday, and it was helpful on a dimly lit dance floor. It made the difference between a usable and unusable shot. The range wasn't so great, but I expected that from other reviews. A couple more watts would make it much more helpful.

Comments about Canon VL-3 On-Camera 3 Watt Video Light:
I ordered the light to use on board for my Canon XL2 at an engagement party. The pary was inside a night club. Very dim lighting. The extra light was a necessity.
The light put out a pretty good amount of light for its size. Subjects need to be within 8 feet, and 4 feet to be lit well.
The only thing I did not like was the shadows that it casts on your subjects. It was very tricky getting good shots due to the shadows that fell on shoulders, arms of my subjects. I would say the light source was not that even.

Comments about Canon VL-3 On-Camera 3 Watt Video Light:
I was very pleased with the field of light provided. It is great for interviews, close-ups, and walk-ups. My first usage was with street walking scenes where the subject came into the shot and walked by. My primary use has been for music video. Unit is smaller than I anticipated, thereby the light provided is greater than you would think. My usage is on the CANON XL2.

This tiny light fits great on my camcorder. It's great for close ups that's what it was made for. Don't expect it to light up a room. It also turns it self on and off only when it's needed when attached to my Canon HV30,that's a major plus.. Love the light.

I am using this light on my GL2. My first time out with it was a twilight wedding - it was the perfect amount of light to get a sharp, clear picture. What a difference using this light makes! I next used it for a "talking head" set up for a daytime, outdoor interview. It evened out the light and eliminated shadows on my subject's face.
This light is a great value for the price, and works wonderfully! I just wish my camera had two shoes (!!) but I'll be placing my mics in other spots, because I intend to use this light often!

Good if you need to light up a face or object at close range (2 feet). Otherwise, you find very little use for this light.

Comments about Canon VL-3 On-Camera 3 Watt Video Light:
An excellent camera mounted light. Not to bright to be blinding, but just enough fill with some side lighting to get the perfect shot. Not the light for the Videographer who wants to shoot the entire room or a long distance group shot. But then it's size give that away to begin with. It does what it size, value and wattage indicates. For those uses it is perfect.

Comments about Canon VL-3 On-Camera 3 Watt Video Light:
The light works well and is driven by the camera's "smart" hotshoe. Main disadvantage (which is common to all hotshoe accessories) is that it cannot be used at the same time as the shotgun microphone

It's a really small and compact light. in expensive and good for a novice for about 10 feet. if you wanting to do something big, you will need something way bigger.

Product works just like it's described. Hook it up to the hot shoe, turn on the camera, set the light to 'Auto' or 'On' and give it a go!
I use it on a Canon GL2. It is a very bright, almost harsh light 3-6ft in distance. I found that in very low lit areas, the light does not bring out great detail in metallic objects. This light is great though if you are just shooting close-ups of people say in a bar.

Easy Plug and Play setup; be sure your video camera is compatible; brightness above average but not as good as separate spotlight.
