This device lets you view objects that are at a 90° angle from the direction the telescope is pointing, allowing comfortable viewing when the telescope is at or near the zenith(directly overhead).

Celestron's erect image diagonals are Amici prism designs, meaning that images are upright and laterally correct.  This makes it quite comfortable for terrestrial uses as well as easily used in conjunction with starcharts, but also comes at the expense of a bit of light when compared to mirror diagonals-which reverse the view but are brighter.  The choice is yours.
