This is an excellent all around lens. I purchased this lens after reviewing several lenses and have been delighted by its optical range and the quality of the photos I get using this lens. I use this both indoors and out capturing both portraits and landscapes, and have gotten consistent, quality results.
With that being said, this is not an "L" series lens, and is the only reason I have given it a 4 out of 5 stars. Then again, this lens is not priced as an "L" series lens. For the quality of photo you are going to get compared to the price you are going to pay, this is hands down one of the best buys you can make.
This is not a Macro lens, so close-up shots will either be difficult or impossible. While the lens is well constructed, it should be handled with care as it is made mostly of plastic.
If you are looking for a single, all around solid lens to use for the majority of your photography, this is the lens for you.

I needed a lens of small size to be an average walk about lens. The lens performs well as for that purpose, for taking or doing general photography but however, I was disappointed in its performance as being a modest macro, as suggested on the lens barrel. Worth the money however, if you need a good all round lens for snapshots and travel photos. Would I recommend it, I suppose so. It performs well as I mentioned for general photogaphic purposes and it is also well built. Colors are good, as well as sharpness and I noticed little or no edge/color distortion at the wide angle and at wide aperatures. However if one wants a really good all round lens, might I suggest the EF 28-135mm IS Wide Angle Zoom from Canon, a bit heavy but worth it.
I also ordered with this lens, a UV filter for protection against scratches, dirt and grime, and of course the dedicated lens hood. Might I suggest a regular rubber collapsable lens hood. They fit better, are much cheaper, and more practical I think. However, this is but one persons opinion and opinions as we all know are like belly buttons, we all have them.

I finally upgraded my kit lens (18-55mm) with this 28-105mm, and I am pleased with the results. With a superior zoom capability, the quick and quiet focus results in sharp pics both indoors and out. It is my "walk around" lens for regular use, and I think it's a great value.

I really like this lens. The zoom range, size, and weight make it a great walkaround lens. The USM motor is extremely quiet. Very crisp images. A highly recommended lens for every day multipurpose use, and at a great price.

I bought this len for my canon 40d. I believe it is the most economical Canon USM len. Also this len has a good range of focus length, and it is not too heavy or bulky. I use it for outdoor photography.

Comments about Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Autofocus Lens:
This lens is the best in its class. The difference between this lens, and a Sigma lens in the same price range is significant. Canon provides the best value and consistent quality. The optics are solid, focus is crisp at all zoom lengths, and it is rugged in construction with a metal mounting base where many inexpensive lenses now substitute plastic. It is a "semi-professional" quality lens, and obviously not the high end Canon pro grade. But it is outstanding bang for the buck.

Great value for an all around lens. Nice and sharp (for a zoom), not the fastest to focus but yet good. For small budgets, probably the best one to have when you can't carry many lens around.

I bought this lense to have the limited depth of field settings needed for some portrait work. I decided to try it out taking pictures during a recording secession and found that this lense was about two levels above the kit lense I had been using on my Canon digital Rebel. Wow, this lense has better than expected sharpness. Well manufactered, nice and tight. Very smooth and accurate operation in the AF mode. Pictures were great!

Extremely sharp focus and a perfect range for just walking around. I bought this lens mainly to walk around in Disney World and have enough range to take just about ANY kind of picture. Its super quiet when it focuses too. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for an inexpensive lens with a decent f/ and great range, this is DEFINITELY the lens for you.

Used on a Canon T1i - I decided to get the body only, and get this instead of the cheapo kit-lens. It's made a world of difference and is a great all-around starter lens.
The only thing I wish it had was IS(image stabilization), but IS lenses are heavier and cost more, and I don't see much shake-related blur in my photos anyway.
Also, because of the focal length multiplier on my T1i, it ends up being more like a 45-168mm - something to keep in mind when researching an entry-level dslr.

If you're not willing (or unable) to shell out the big bucks for an L series lens, the EF 28-105mm is a good everyday lens that doesn't break your wallet.
The auto-focus seems kind of slow in low light and it feels kind of cheap, but seriously, you can't beat the price.

Love this lens. Quality of pictures very good, including the edges. All my standard 58 mm lens filters already fit this lens, saving me the cost of additional CP, 81A and 82B filters. Nice size to carry around on my Rebel XTi. Camera is nicely balanced with this lens. Shooting at 10 megapixels Raw, I find that I rarely need a longer lens for family shots, vacations and weekend outings. Adobe Photoshop does the rest for me. [...]

Put it on my Canon EOS 400D XTi, and it has worked flawlessly. Just got it after Christmas, so I haven't taken all that many pix yet, probably about 50 or so. I'm not a critic of picture quality and I am trying to learn about apiture and f-stops, etc. So I shoot mainly using the auto mode. Its not fast when focusing, but not all that slow either.I think for the entry level user, such as I, this is a good investment.
I really can't afford to buy the more expensive Canon lenses, so I'm happy with this lens I bought from B&H.

Comments about Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Autofocus Lens:
This is a quality lens. I didn't get the kit lens, using this lens has my main lens. I recommend if you have a few bucks to spare and don't want the kit lens (or want something better). However, I have seen some lenses that have have about the same zoom range but bigger apertures (like f2.8). I would recommend getting one of these.
Also, there is one annoying downside. It is really hard to get the lens to aperture 3.5. I have a canon eos rebel t1i, and even when it is on manual, either the camera or the lens will not let me go to f/3.5. Rather, it stops at f/4.0. Why? I haven't a clue.

Comments about Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Autofocus Lens:
I bought this after upgrading to a full-frame camera, and desperately wanted a wide-ish angle lens without putting a dent in my 'L lens fund'.
Given the price, the quality is far, far better than the kit 18-55 on Canon's APS-C cameras.
The auto-focus is almost silent, very fast, and you can manually adjust with the auto turned on - useful if you want to use the auto-focus to get you close, then manually bump it with the shutter half held down, or in really low light where you need to get it in the ballpark.
No lens creep, everything seems very tight and showing no signs of loosening at all, but very easy to use.
It's of course, not as crisp as an L lens, but it's pretty good, especially when you factor in the price. The biggest issue is pretty serious cyanic aberration when shooting contre jour subjects, but really, not that bad at screen-size pictures - but quite noticeable at 100%.
I'll definitely keep this lens as a spare when I upgrade to the 24-70mm 2.8L - it's a great everyday lens for snapshots and almost passable for 8x10 professional prints - most people don't even notice the CA until I point it out to them.

After I purchased my DSLR camera body, I started researching lenses. I didn't have a lot of money to spend, and I chose this lens.
I love it and can't believe I got this kind of quality for the little money I spent.
I use it as my every day lens. Although it is heavier than the 18-55 mm lens that came with my camera, it is a small price to pay for the zoom and picture quality I get.
This is a perfect multipurpose lens for a beginner like me.
