The Explorer incorporates many new ideas in tripod design, the most prominent of which is individually locking legs that can be fixed at any angle from 0° to 90°. The column will tilt from the vertical, right over beyond the horizontal and lock solidly at any angle. A swivel at the lock on the column lets you position the angled column over a leg for stability, or between the spread legs to shoot straight down onto the floor. As the name suggests the Explorer is aimed at photographers working in the field. Quick to use, rugged and innovatively designed, the Explorer will help you to discover new ways of using a tripod. Hold your camera steady in places you might never have thought of, and capture pictures previously beyond your horizons.

I bought this tripod because of its versatility especially for natural light macro. Its easy to set up and works great for what I wanted it for. Unfortunately there are a few weak spots. The threaded nut that holds the center column in place isn't hardened and it snapped off after 17 days of use. All the other bolts look hardened so I'm not sure what Gitzo cheaped out on this one. Also the levers that tighten the legs look like at some point they may break where the connections are. Only time will tell.
I decided to get get a replacement rather than a refund because I'm really enjoying using it for macro.

Comments about Gitzo G2220 Explorer Alumimum 3 Section Tripod/Rapid Column:
Well, I had this tripod for a week, used it three times, and as I was tightening down the column extension lock knob, the screw exploded, leaving one half inside the tripod and one half in my hand, useless. I sent it in to Gitzo last week to have it repaired under warranty and have yet to hear a reply, so we'll see how that goes...but before I broke it, I loved it. The legs will lock at any angle, which is very convenient, and the swivel and tilt column really helps achieve the more awkward angles. Plus, unless you're HORRIBLY out of shape, the "added weight" of aluminum (vs carbon fiber) is negligible.

Comments about Gitzo G2220 Explorer Alumimum 3 Section Tripod/Rapid Column:
It's solid as Gitzo gets. Durable, practical, flexible and extremely scalable. Use it for macro because of its pivotal head or standard use w/legs extended. It's a field tripod, but works for any use. But with Gitzo, its higher in price and I do not believe that is warranted for what it produces. Tough not to buy though.

Comments about Gitzo G2220 Explorer Alumimum 3 Section Tripod/Rapid Column:
This Tripod is the one that I am looking for. It is very excellent and flexible use for variety of camera positioning. It is very incredible when I use it with the head to take some pictures angling level up from the ground.

Comments about Gitzo G2220 Explorer Alumimum 3 Section Tripod/Rapid Column:
I've been using this tripod paired with an Arcatech ultimate ballhead since Aug 04 and haven't had much to complain about. The pro's are as everyone else have said, terrificly flexible and holds up any reasonable amount of camera equipment.
The issues i've had since abusing it have been easily repaired. I've lost two feet due to them unscrewing, so I ensure that they're tightened when I take the tripod on a trip, and i've had to replace the plastic inserts in the twist locks that shattered over time. I purchased a bag of new inserts from Gitzo without too much cost and hassle and it was pretty easy to replace them.
Besides that, it's been my primary tripod and goes with me everywhere.

Comments about Gitzo G2220 Explorer Alumimum 3 Section Tripod/Rapid Column:
I had this for a year and over time it stopped functioning properly. The locks deteriorated over time and no matter what I did to tighten the, the legs would slip, the feet fell off as well as the rubber that gripped the tripod. I of course bought another Gitzo (carbon fiber, and love it, but miss the versatility of the G2220) but I was really disappointed with this model.

Comments about Gitzo G2220 Explorer Alumimum 3 Section Tripod/Rapid Column:
This product gives excellent use for a wide variety of camera positioning needs, without disassembly an reassembly. The only negative is that the legs do not have predefined stop spots. But the wide range of possibilities, especially the angling of the head at levels from ground up is incredible and definitely easier than any Bogen I have tried.

The tripod works as advertised, but I did have a design flaw issue. The Stud that is used to tighten down the telescoping main shaft, broke out of the housing and rendered it useless. [...]

Comments about Gitzo G2220 Explorer Alumimum 3 Section Tripod/Rapid Column:
It is incredibly adjustable, and easy to manipulate. It's very light (not as light as higher grade Gitzo's, but much lighter than comparable steel equivalents). Glitches include: Can't put a counterweight, if you have it collapsed on the ground. The bevel is on the legs, and the column doesn't have a dial for reproducible angles. I don't like the twist lock for leg extension (I prefer clamps, or wingnuts).

Comments about Gitzo G2220 Explorer Alumimum 3 Section Tripod/Rapid Column:
I'm more pleased than I expected, so far the only thing I've noticed that isn't ideal are the leg locks, while they lock in firmly and the tension is adjustable, you can't decrease the locking pressure without making the legs looser than I'd like when the locks are in their unlocked position (this is a minor thing and I have been able to find a happy medium by playing with the adjustment screws).

Comments about Gitzo G2220 Explorer Alumimum 3 Section Tripod/Rapid Column:
I love how unique this tripod is - lets you set up impossible angles and get down so low. I hate that the tightening bolt on the center column broke off less than a week after purchase. I'm exchanging it for a different model... don't want to risk going through the same situation with a replacement.

Comments about Gitzo G2220 Explorer Alumimum 3 Section Tripod/Rapid Column:
I know there might be bigger, better, and neater out there, but for this photo weekend warrior this Gitzo is getting it done. Weather I am folding down and out for those close MACRO's, or Medium heights for those portraits of the kids, or being knocked around in the woods capturing shots of birds the G2220 has been more then ready to answer the call. It's lightweight, opens and collapses down quickly and quietly.
