Although I bought this from B&H years ago for my Sennheiser ME66, I am just now submitting a review. Since then, I've been experimenting with less bulky alternatives. There are none. Foam obviously doesn't work, and putting layers of fuzz around a mic is also ineffective. The Softie is bigger than the camcorder!Where I live the wind is constant year-round, 10-40mph at all times. I surmise that there needs to be space between the impact of the wind and the mic diaphragm. The Rycote has about 1.5" of effective material within that space. After 30mph, I need to stick the Softie inside a blimp covered with shag.In addition to the Rycote Softie, I also have to engage the bass roll-off on the mic, and the Softie does cut some of the high-end. So I'm trimming both low and high frequencies. Ultimately, however, I end up with usable sound. When I'm in the field with journalists and other shooters, if they don't have a Softie, I know they're not getting usable sound. I see/hear they're stuff on the internet, and it's painful.

Just buy it and enjoy the difference.
BONUS:
- Add "Pro look" for small camcorders.
- Comes with a comb ... (no comment)
Cons:
- Shooter with wide angle lens, careful or it will get into the frame! Buy some friction arm to avoid it.
- Quite pricey but it does what it supposes to do.

Used on vacation while sailing in the British Virgin Islands. I was amazed at how well it handled substantial wind both while moored and under sail.

As a taper of live music (over 20 years experience) I only get one chance to do it right and I never know exactly what I am going to be dealing with as far as environment.
Outdoor concerts are particularly difficult for many reasons, wind being the most common problem.
I have tried many different products to cope with this issue and NOTHING beats a Rycote Windscreen!
I recently recorded a show with wind gusts of 30mph+ blowing across an open field and the recording came out so good one cannot even tell from listening if it were recorded inside or outside.
I DEFINITELY recommend the Rycote Windscreen for ANYONE who needs to use a microphone outside. The wind suppression is absolutely unbelievable and there is ZERO sound signal lost. Amazing product!

Very simple, the shotgun mic just slides in. I haven't tried it in strong wind yet, but on a normal day it worked perfectly.

Another great Rycore product. Stops wind dead in it's tracks and fits my Sennie ME66 like a glove.

I use this to cover my sennheiser ME66 mic on my Panasonic HVX camera. It's light, protects the mic, and you'll never have to deal with a whisper of wind again. Only drawback is it sheds like a naughty pet.

I don't know how we managed without this windscreen for the sennheiser shotgun mike on board the dvx-100. It's a little big so makes sure you get a really good shoe mount with the elastics (can't remember what it's called). The sound is nice and clear and no more clamor from mother nature.

Comments about Rycote Standard Hole Softie Windscreen with 19 - 22mm (0.74 - 0.87") Hole Size:
This softie works really well. It cuts a lot of noise coming from LATERAL wind (not frontal!), but also cuts the crispy sound of an excellent microphone attached to it (aka: RØDE NTG-3). A good thing about this is that it is kind of a natural gain controller. The sound is almost never likely to peak when the softie is attached (and the gain is set correctly according to the situation).

Classic Softie. Comes with a wicked cool brush that should definitely tip the scale if your are interested. It is retractable!! The softie is a great buy, and rycote has made another quality product. I suggest getting the kit if you want this and the lyre mount.

Anytime you're outside your shotgun really needs protection from wind noise. The Rycote Softie provides excellent protection for a nice clean signal. For the money, you just can't beat it. Highly recommended.
