The Sony GVD-200 Digital-8 Walkman is a compact and portable Walkman for playing, recording, and editing your footage. It offers 20-segment Assemble Editing, using Infrared signals that are compatible with a wide array of consumer camcorders and VCRs, as well as LaserLink IFT-R20 Wireless Transmitter System, SP and LP Record/Playback speeds, i.LINK DV Interface (IEEE-1394), 16-bit or 12-bit PCM Audio, Frame Advance, crystal clear Still and Slow Motion, Index Titler and Time Code. The GVD-200 is a backward compatible VCR allowing the Hi-8 and 8mm tape playback.
Audio recording is a standard PCM Stereo Audio, with a 96db dynamic range. Both 12 and 16-bit audio modes are provided. Its Sony i.Link DV interface provides high-speed, bi-directional digital linking between camcorders VCRs for digital-to-digital editing, unmatched versatility, and performance.
The GVD-200 also has standard analog inputs, an index titler, and a built-in assemble editor function to mark and cut 20 different scenes. The Control L connection joins camcorders, VCRs, and editing controllers for precision control and ease of use during editing/dubbing.
The GVD-200 has 2x Playback/Playback Zoom to allow high-speed playback in forward and reverse, enabling you to zoom into selected areas of the video for a superb editing option. During recording, an automatic circuit helps reduce digital noise. The GVD-200 also has a Time Based Correction function, which replaces the video signal with a clear sync pulse so that timing errors commonly seen as jitter in home videos are corrected.

Nice portable deck, works like a charm. The iLink (firewire1394) jack and the stable play/record head makestransferring old Digital8/Video8/Hi8 tapes to my PC for DVDsa piece of cake.Abobe Premiere Pro 1.5 recognized the deck instantly on myWindows XP machine. No issues. Also, a nice bonus of this unit is being able to piggybackmy JVC S-VHS into the unit when I need to play VHS-C tapes, and utilize the iLink of this unit to capture though my PCw/o needing a Canopus or other Analog/Digital converter. This deck sure beats using an old Hi8 camera, and thequality level is much better and stable. The client noticedthe difference on the finished DVDs.Unit has S-Video in and out ports, and a composite 3 plugjack. Also has LANC, headphone jack, A/V ID2 inputs. Nice. You can get a battery for it, but why you'd need one isbeyond me. The unit comes with a standard Sony A/C powerplug which is identical to the one for my PD170 and DSR110.Look at it this way, if you have lots of old media toupconvert for a client, and you've been using an ancientVideo8, Digital8 or Hi8 camera, you should get this deck.First, it eliminates the problem of using old equipment forcapture (which affects quality levels).Second, it allows you to digitally capture 3 differentformats of digital tape on your PC with one compact deck. Third, it also functions as an input/piggyback device for otheranalog VTRs or VCRs with its Svideo in/out, composite-in/outports, and iLink (firewire) functionality. eliminates the needfor a separate convertor in many cases.I am super pleased with how this machine worked, it's areally great unit for the price.
Problems Encountered: None.
Previous Equivalent Items Owned: A very old Hi8 camera for capture with too many hours of use on it
Items I Recommend: Nothing except a firewire cable if you dont have one.

Comments about Sony GVD-200 Digital-8 Walkman:
This Digital-8 really brings out the full quality of the digital-8 tapes. I was able to record some to dvd, and while doing so, I watched them on my HD TV, and the quality of the picture was outstanding.
Definitely user-friendly. Did not even have to read the instructions and was able to set up and use immediately.

Comments about Sony GVD-200 Digital-8 Walkman:
I did not buy it for the recording features but for playing tapes for capture to a computer for authoring DVD's. (Transfer 8mm tapes to DVD).
This GVD-200 model has no viewing screen but I knew that when I bought it.
It has Firewire and S-video outputs for max resolution of video quality. However, Firewire may not work on some tape transfers and you will have to use S-video.
I did a comparison transfer test of a HI8 tape between the GVD-200 and old Sony camcorder (DCR-TRV330). The GVD-200 made only minor improvements in video quality on the DVD's I authored. If your camcorder still works for tape transfers, you probably don't need this deck.
However, good working 8mm camcorders that can handle all 8mm tape formats are getting harder to find and this deck is probably the last 8mm tape player that can be purchased new because Sony is scheduled to end production in Oct 2011.

Great for converting (analog) Video 8 tapes to digital video files. Since my original camcorder output playback had gone bad. The GVD-200 Digital-8 was just what I needed to convert all those Video 8 tapes to digital archive files.
Plus it has builded in Firewire connective for transfer straight into to digital editing application.

Comments about Sony GVD-200 Digital-8 Walkman:
I purchased this player to be able to view and transfer 8mm video tapes after our camera died a few years back. It works well playing all of the old tapes. The only think lacking in this device is the lack of a remote control. For the price it should have one. Luckily the remote for the broken camera works with it.

I have many important 8mm tapes from both an analog camcorder and a digital one. When my digital camcorder broke I lost the abilty to view these tape. This allows me to view the tapes and transfer them to newer media.

Comments about Sony GVD-200 Digital-8 Walkman:
Simple, small, easy to use. I bought this device because I have a lot of 8 and Hi 8 MM video tapes that I'm digitizing. My old 8 MM camera finally quit and my Hi8 camera is old. I needed something to play my tapes back. The GVD-200 does the job. Actually has more features than I'll use. It takes the place of three pieces of equipment too.

With the death of the Hi8 camcorder, we were loosing the ability to play all those tapes of our child growing up. Why did we take them if not to watch? This little walkman plays all of them, even the early 8 tapes!! We have had no troubles with it! We couldn't be more pleased

Comments about Sony GVD-200 Digital-8 Walkman:
Works as advertised and was able to recover some sync damaged content already. My old video camera was running out of life (not just a cleaning job needed). I had a selection of Hi8 and Digital8 tapes from 1991 and later. This nicely connected with my iMac. It appears to have way more features than I would ever need, but it is also an A to D converter. When I'm done converting, I will probably still keep this just for the fact that I won't throw out the tapes.

Comments about Sony GVD-200 Digital-8 Walkman:
Over the years I had recorded many family vacations, bithdays, weddings, etc... with my Hi 8 camcorder. I started transferring these tapes to PC for editing but my Hi 8 vcr died and could not be repaired. I bought a used professional Hi 8 vcr but it failed after playing one tape. I then used my Hi 8 camcorder for transfer but it also died. I was left with over 50 tapes and no means of watching them or transferring them to computer until I came upon this little gem. It plays the Hi 8 tapes digitiaing them on the fly and transferring them to computer via firewire. No need for internal or external devices. The picture is as good as it was recorded and the sound is fine. Setup took less than 5 minutes and so far there has been no problems.

Comments about Sony GVD-200 Digital-8 Walkman:
I have been on the hunt for a product that could reliably help me resurrect memories buried in dozens of Hi8 analog tapes that I could no longer play since my camcorder died. The high end 1400 dollar pieces appeared the only viable route. But then I chanced on this great product. I have tested its features already and am very happy I bought it. My first goal is to convert those Hi8 to digital format, but I am sure I will also find much use for its digital recording and playback capabilities. Thanks, Sony, for keeping this in the market and keeping the analog capability and angalog-digital conversion in the product.
