Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Nikon HB-24 Bayonet Lens Hood:

I used this product on a rainy trip on my Nikon 70-200 2.8 lens and it worked great. It was a better option than the shade that came with the lens.

I broke the detent on the hood that came with the lens. While the hood would still stay on it could vibrate loose very easily. The new hood is identical to the original and works as intended.

Comments about Nikon HB-24 Bayonet Lens Hood:

And had to get a replacement. Luckily the original hood took the force of the impact, saving me any grief with the lens. Bottom line is the replacement hood fit just perfectly and I am off shooting once again.

Comments about Nikon HB-24 Bayonet Lens Hood:

My previous lens hood for my Nikon 80-400 VR lens fell off the lens into the water while I was photographing birds. It did not have a tight and secure fit on the lens. This new lens hood fits more securely and should not fall off while taking photos.

Comments about Nikon HB-24 Bayonet Lens Hood:

This lightweight hood does a good job of eliminating lens flare. It also screws on the lens backwards for easy fit into camera bag and storage. However, don't bang around from the side too much in reverse position - recently had to replace mine.
