The Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared) is for use with D40, D40X, D50, D60, D70, D70S, D80, D90, D3000, D5000, Coolpix P6000, N65, N75, Coolpix 8400, 8800, Pronea S, Nuvis S & Lite Touch Zoom Cameras. It acts as a wireless shutter release capable of instantly triggering the shutter without disturbing the camera, up to a distance of approximately 16' (4.87 m) in front of the camera. It is recommended for taking pictures of subjects that are difficult to approach, or to minimize vibration for close-ups and time exposure, and it is powered by a CR-2025 3v battery (included). The ML-L3 supports the bulb exposure camera setting making it a worthwhile accessory for shooting long time exposures for low-light photography or unusual daylight effects.
When the ML-L3 remote control is used in M mode, users can select '- -' as the shutter speed. At this setting, the shutter opens when the shutter-release button on the ML-L3 remote control is pressed (2 seconds after the button is pressed in delayed remote mode) and remains open until the remote-control shutter-release button is pressed a second time (maximum exposure time is 30 minutes). Nikon recommends using a fully-charged EN-EL3 battery or an optional EH-5 AC adapter when using long exposures. For information regarding using the ML-L3 with flash please see the camera's user manual. Basically, depress the timer 3x to get it ready, press to start the shot and step away. Come back and press the button again and it stops the shot.

I use the Nikon ML-L3 remote with my Nikon D60, typically mounted on a tripod. I basically bought it since it was relatively cheap and I found that I was using the 10 second timer often and thought it would be neat to be able to snap multiple pictures without having to get out of the picture every time. I haven't used it at a distance where the range for the remote was a problem, but again, most of of the use is for group shots which I use my 18-55mm or my 35mm lenses, so I'm really not that far from the camera to begin with.ProsOnce you figure out how to use it, it's pretty easy and fun to just snap away when you are in group shots (by the way - you have to change the shot capture setting from single shot or continuous shot to remote with 2 second timer or remote single shot - more in the cons). Oh - and it's cheap at [$] it was a no brainer for me to get, even if it didn't work great it wasn't like I was making any real investment in it.ConsNo instructions came with the remote. I thought I'd be able to just start snapping away with the remote but you actually have to change the shot capture setting to the remote shot or the 2 sec remote shot - you will probably have the setting on single or continuous shot. Didn't think to look at my shot settings, so I had to look it up online to find out what I was missing. So that's it - remember to make sure that your shot capture settings are correct and that you don't turn off and on the camera right before you use the remote, since the camera will default to your last none remote capture setting when you turn on the camera again and you have to change it back to remote. I like it - it's cheap. Ding for the no instructions... It just occurred to me that if your group has multiple Nikon that are compatible with this remote, you can take multiple group pictures with a single remote. I'll have to test that out...

This remote works fine and the range seems pretty good. I have not had it long, so I cannot really speak to its durability or battery life. That being said, I was a bit disappointed when it arrived. First of all, it is tiny with no manufactured way to attach it to anything (like a lanyard or even a key ring). The tiny case it comes in has some slits, but they don’t look like they are good for much. Also, you have to have a direct line of sight to the front of the camera (where the camera’s sensor is positioned.) This is just dandy for self portraits, but I like to do wildlife photography. I thought this would enable me to get some shots of animals that would normally be spooked by me standing next to the camera. I can’t imagine many opportunities where the subject would be between the camera and me. It would be much better if it worked like a remote car starter (just need to be within a certain range, not pointing it at the sensor.) It’s ridiculous to expect me to drop hundreds of dollars to upgrade to a remote system that can do this. Some might say you get what you pay for, but that’s a whole other issue. Yes, this thing only costs around [$], but come on. I got a universal remote that can be programmed to command every component of my home theater for less than [$]! All this thing has is one darn button on it! Bottom line, it’s a fine product. I’ll keep it, because it is great for portraits and macro stuff. I just think it should either be more versatile or cost less.

I take photos of infants and sometimes when I post them I have mere seconds to get the shot before they squirm so this remote made it extremely easy to get the shot quickly.

I use this remote for self potraits mostly but it is useable in many other applications. It is very compact and can be carried just about anywhere. It was a great addition to my D70 DSLR because it opened up other ways to use the camera. The price is decent as well.

I use this product with my Nikon D7000 and it works perfectly. The range, the size, and ease of use are great. I would highly recommend the minimal investment for any photographer. Combined with a tripod, this remote is an awesome tool for slow shutter speeds. If you have a problem with blurred photos, this could be a really quick fix.

I used this to do a stop motion video project for class. I was able to be in front of the camera while shooting myself. I don't know how I could have gotten the project done without this little guy. I love it. It was difficult for me to identify which remote would work with my Nikon D3000. This one does a great job. It's very easy to set the D3000 to receive the remotes wireless infrared signal.

I'm using this with my D7000. Just enable the remote in the settings then turn the dial to the remote icon and you're ready to go! It's tiny so it fits in any little pocket of your bag and is easily concelled in your hand when you want to join the group shot. Also great for night shooting on a tripod to avoid shake and blur.

I wanted to take pictures of fireworks and night scenes. You don't have to be right in front of the camera to use the device. The unit works great on various angles. Will have to wait and see how long the battery lasts.

It does what it is supposed to do. Works perfectly with a D7000, and many other Nikons. It comes with a little protective cover/ holder, and you don't even have to remove it from the sheith - just point, press, and you have a picture.
Haven't tested the range yet, but seems to be plenty. Of course it is line of sight, so you can't hide it behind something. Not an issue for me.

This remote is a great way to not have to run back to the camera and reset the timer!

Comments about Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared):
I never realized how much I would use this remote until I got it. It is great for the occasional group photo or long exposure. Just so you know, you'll need to set your camera to a remote mode before you can use it. On the Nikon D7000, you just spin the drive mode dial to the tiny remote and click the only button on the remote. The only possible Con that I can think of is the fact that the camera focuses and then snaps the picture (if you have it in AF). The camera pretty much always focuses correctly, but I think the remote would be just a little more useful if it had a button for focus and a button for the shutter release. But, for such a low price, you really can't complain.

Comments about Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared):
I just wanted a remote so I wouldn't have to touch the camera when it was on a tripod. It is a short-distance infrared so it is line-of-sight for ~16 feet. But for the price it works for my purposes.

Comments about Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared):
I have used the remote for activating the bulb function of my Nikon D5100 from both the front IR receiver and rear IR receiver with ease. Remote works great after composing the picture with both the 2 sec delay and instant. Comes with a storage pouch that attaches to the camera strap for keeping it handy.
Only downside I can think of is that its button construction kind of feels flimsy like it probably won't have a long life, but could be more durable then it appears. There is no on remote on/off selector like on the old remote I had for my old Canon EOS IX IR remote.
