The Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared) is for use with D40, D40X, D50, D60, D70, D70S, D80, D90, D3000, D5000, Coolpix P6000, N65, N75, Coolpix 8400, 8800, Pronea S, Nuvis S & Lite Touch Zoom Cameras. It acts as a wireless shutter release capable of instantly triggering the shutter without disturbing the camera, up to a distance of approximately 16' (4.87 m) in front of the camera. It is recommended for taking pictures of subjects that are difficult to approach, or to minimize vibration for close-ups and time exposure, and it is powered by a CR-2025 3v battery (included). The ML-L3 supports the bulb exposure camera setting making it a worthwhile accessory for shooting long time exposures for low-light photography or unusual daylight effects.

The ML-L3 supports the bulb exposure camera setting making it a worthwhile accessory for shooting long time exposures during low-light photography sessions, or for unusual daylight effects.

When the ML-L3 remote control is used in M mode, users can select '- -' as the shutter speed. At this setting, the shutter opens when the shutter-release button on the ML-L3 remote control is pressed (2 seconds after the button is pressed in delayed remote mode) and remains open until the remote-control shutter-release button is pressed a second time (maximum exposure time is 30 minutes). Nikon recommends using a fully-charged EN-EL3 battery or an optional EH-5 AC adapter when using long exposures. For information regarding using the ML-L3 with flash please see the camera's user manual. Basically, depress the timer 3x to get it ready, press to start the shot and step away. Come back and press the button again and it stops the shot.

I use the Nikon ML-L3 remote with my Nikon D60, typically mounted on a tripod. I basically bought it since it was relatively cheap and I found that I was using the 10 second timer often and thought it would be neat to be able to snap multiple pictures without having to get out of the picture every time. I haven't used it at a distance where the range for the remote was a problem, but again, most of of the use is for group shots which I use my 18-55mm or my 35mm lenses, so I'm really not that far from the camera to begin with.ProsOnce you figure out how to use it, it's pretty easy and fun to just snap away when you are in group shots (by the way - you have to change the shot capture setting from single shot or continuous shot to remote with 2 second timer or remote single shot - more in the cons). Oh - and it's cheap at [$] it was a no brainer for me to get, even if it didn't work great it wasn't like I was making any real investment in it.ConsNo instructions came with the remote. I thought I'd be able to just start snapping away with the remote but you actually have to change the shot capture setting to the remote shot or the 2 sec remote shot - you will probably have the setting on single or continuous shot. Didn't think to look at my shot settings, so I had to look it up online to find out what I was missing. So that's it - remember to make sure that your shot capture settings are correct and that you don't turn off and on the camera right before you use the remote, since the camera will default to your last none remote capture setting when you turn on the camera again and you have to change it back to remote. I like it - it's cheap. Ding for the no instructions... It just occurred to me that if your group has multiple Nikon that are compatible with this remote, you can take multiple group pictures with a single remote. I'll have to test that out...

This remote works fine and the range seems pretty good. I have not had it long, so I cannot really speak to its durability or battery life. That being said, I was a bit disappointed when it arrived. First of all, it is tiny with no manufactured way to attach it to anything (like a lanyard or even a key ring). The tiny case it comes in has some slits, but they don’t look like they are good for much. Also, you have to have a direct line of sight to the front of the camera (where the camera’s sensor is positioned.) This is just dandy for self portraits, but I like to do wildlife photography. I thought this would enable me to get some shots of animals that would normally be spooked by me standing next to the camera. I can’t imagine many opportunities where the subject would be between the camera and me. It would be much better if it worked like a remote car starter (just need to be within a certain range, not pointing it at the sensor.) It’s ridiculous to expect me to drop hundreds of dollars to upgrade to a remote system that can do this. Some might say you get what you pay for, but that’s a whole other issue. Yes, this thing only costs around [$], but come on. I got a universal remote that can be programmed to command every component of my home theater for less than [$]! All this thing has is one darn button on it! Bottom line, it’s a fine product. I’ll keep it, because it is great for portraits and macro stuff. I just think it should either be more versatile or cost less.

Makes taking pictures a real joy. Stopped the blur I was getting even with the self timer.

This way I set the camer for what I want then no hands to touch the camera. One click and the camera takes the picture.

I bought this remote for my new Nikon D5100. It took about 30 seconds to get it set-up and working properly. I'm sure it's a lower end remote but it works great for such a cheap price.

Great, lightweight remote. It's very small and fits into my camera case without taking much space at all. Very easy to use - it only took a few minutes to figure out how to use it and it worked great. I bought one for my daughter also. Reasonably priced. I'm very pleased.

I used the remote control to take family pictures so I could include myself. It works as advertised. However there are no instructions included with the packaging so you must read the camera's instruction on how the remote needs to be set up. It is easy following the instructions of your camera. It is well worth the money.

You can't get any more simple than this, set the camera to the appropriate mode, focus either manual or auto, point the remote at the camera and you're done. Note I said focus before pressing the button, this remote operates the shutter only. My only problem is its size, watch you don't drop it and loose it! I use mine with my Nikon D7000 with no problems.

Comments about Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared):

Don't waste your money on the "cheap" knock off remotes - they may be a cheaper initially but you will pay in wasted time, frustration and a callous on your thumb - they are unreliable and cheap for a reason. Spend a little more, and the that's relative since the ML-L3 is pretty affordable really, and get the REAL THING. The ML-L3 works every time! I've yet to have it fail where as the knock offs worked for a few times then became useless.

Save yourself time and frustration - get the Nikon!!

Comments about Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared):

This is a great product. I was able to use in a number of situations while my camera was on tripod. Recommend for anyone doing self-portraits or long-shutter exposures.

Only took time to figure who to get the device to be recognized by camera, but more user error than issue with documentation.

I use this to take family portraits, either with me in or out of the photo. It's small an inconspicous and works great with my Nikon D5100. Love it and great price!
