The Birns and Sawyer 425003 is a professional acrylic slate with grey scale clapper. This camera-assistant's scene marking slate is 7 x 11" wide with engraved text and sections. It fits into a standard front-box and is meant to be used with dry erase marking pens.

We use this for syncing 2 HDV cameras in an interview setting where we multiclip in Final Cut Later. When the timecode gets off for some reason, the slate always saves us. Very simple and easy to use, and cost effective. Why would I pay for one of the expensive ones.
