Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This size is perfect for a 1-2 person head, or head-to-waist shot, or a 4x6 ft product setup.

I have a 36" Impact and personally I like this Lastolite a bit better. Seems to be built better and has a nicer quality of light.

I gave this five stars because of value. I'm sure there are better solutions out there, but this met my need for softer portrait light, easy to set up and adjust, and reasonably sturdy. I wouldn't use it in strong wind, but I got mine primarily indoor shots of family and friends. It's great for that, and makes a HUGE difference over Speedlite light modifiers like the StoFen, etc., although I use them for more portable applications.

nice finish, the tip of the shaft is reinforced, so you won't break it even if you tighten the locking screw very firmly. very good for the price.

Produces easy light, right of the bat used it to do portraits of a man and his extensive sunglass collection. Awesome results.

I use the umbrella on location at weddings and other events. It provides a soft, even, neutral color balanced light. (I have used others that are not neutral and change the color of my light making it difficult to get matched pictures). It is well made, but as with most umbrellas it can be bent if you're not careful.

I use this for on-location shoots, portraits and formal wedding shots. It works to diffuse the light as advertised, but as with any umbrella, you must handle with care.

Used primarily for on site wedding and portrait work. Great soft light results. Much more durable than expected. Had to repair bent parts after a big wind gust toppled the light stand. Still works great!

I use this for portraits, gives a great soft light. The umbrella is pretty sturdy. I've had light stands fall over from a height of 10 to 12 feet and have it hold up. I've also bent ribs on the umbrella, and had to bend them back. Sturdy as umbrellas get. Case it come in better than most.

I like the shoot through style better than bounce. It is softer and can get closer to the subject.
I put a solid aluminum rod into the hollow handle to strengthen and extend the length of the shaft.

I use this as a portable softbox for product lighting and portraiture. It is lightweight but very well made. A great, durable umbrella for the price.
