Canon 1.4x EF Extender II (Teleconverter) Imported

The Canon EF 1.4x II Extender is a high-quality teleconverter that preserves the image quality of the lens it's mounted to and multiplies its focal length by 1.4x. When combined with pro level EOS cameras & EF supertelephoto lenses with image stabilization, near imperviousness to weather extremes is achieved thanks to rubber gasket seals. Improved anti-reflective internal coatings also increase transmissivity & performance in backlit conditions.

The extender will cut back the amount of light by one f/stop. For example using a 1.4x teleconverter with a 300mm f/2.8 lens will effectively increase the focal length to approximately 420mm and the f/2.8 aperture will now be f/4. Teleconverters are best used with longer telephoto lenses and are not recommended for lenses wider than 50mm, e.g. 28-105mm (35mm format).

Note: This teleconverter will only fit and work with a select list of lenses. Please click here for the compatibility chart of all compatible lenses.

Notes on Camera Compatibility
  • Autofocus is possible on any EOS camera when combined with a lens having an f/4 or faster maximum aperture.
  • If the lens is attached to an EOS camera having multiple focusing points and an extender attached, only the center focusing point will be usable for AF.
  • When attached to the EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM lens, the autofocusing range is from 2.6' (0.8 m) to infinity. It varies slightly with the EOS-1v, EOS-1N, EOS-1 and EOS-3.
  • When attached to the EF 400mm f/4L DO ISM lens or the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 lens, autofocus is possible with the center focus point only with EOS 1Ds Mark II, EOS 1Ds Mark III, EOS 1D Mark II, EOS 1D Mark III, EOS 1D, EOS 1v and EOS 3.
  • When attached to the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM autofocus is possible with the center focus point only with EOS 1Ds Mark II, EOS 1Ds, EOS 1D Mark II N, EOS 1D Mark II, EOS 1v HS and EOS 3.
  • When attached to the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens, the Image Stabilizer (IS) will not work with the following EOS cameras: 650, 630, 620, 600, RT, 700, 750, 850, 1, A2, A3, 10S, Elan, Rebel, Rebel II, Rebel S and Rebel SII.

* Image Quality Effects:
This depends on the lenses you use it with. These extenders are engineered for the super teles in my opinion, but I use it for telephoto zoom lenses. I have used this extender on the 70-200 f/2.8L IS and the 70-200 f/4L IS. There is a very slight but noticeable degradation on IQ. The resolution is similar, but what changes is that there is a very small blooming or hazy effect towards the edges of the frame wide open. Centre remains very sharp though. These are all assessments when the lens is wide open (the IQ of course slightly improves when stopping down for both lenses)

Note that YMMV because I am a pixel peeper who views every image at 100%. Even so, I would still say the lenses are still sharp wide open though, especially in the centre.

* 1 Stop Loss:
This is a bigger problem for me personally than the IQ loss, especially with the f/4 lens. A f/5.6 lens is quite slow, but that's what the 70-200 f/4L IS becomes when mounted with an extender.

* AF Slowdown:
The AI Servo AF does slow down when using the Extender with these lenses (with a 1D Mark III). The slowdown is noticeable, though the AF speed would still be classified as "Very Fast" as opposed to "Instant" for the bare lens.

I find it is sometimes a problem with Sports especially as the light starts to dim, and the keeper rate falls slightly if the camera doesn't have enough time to acquire initial focus from a large amount of defocus (For tracking is less affected by this issue)

* Build Quality:
Excellent, solid, very well built, better than even some L lenses I'd say. Weather seal is a plus with Canon 1 series and weather sealed lenses. Have used in rain to no ill effect (YMMV)

* Downsides:
Well, none that are not known before you purchase the item.

None of the downsides (loss of light and loss of IQ) are suprising or avoidable based on current physics. But one thing that can be changed is price - this is an overpriced piece of equipment imo...it's almost as pricey as a nice lens like a 100mm Macro

BH Photo's price is decent in comparison, but some of the local retailers in Australia have it at a ridiculous price - I suggest shopping around to grab a bargain.

I use this extender with an ef70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens on an EOS 40D camera, and primarily shoot motor sports. The magnification is as expected, but comes with a marked reduction in auto focus speed.

When shooting a car coming directly at the camera with the extender, the camera hunts for focus about 30% of the time, and is slow to focus on the remainder. With a motorcycle, the hunting goes up to over 50%. I now use manual focus, and wait for the subject to "come to me" before taking the shot. In situations that don't require the almost instant focus the lens alone provides, the extender is a useful tool, and when the focus does lock, it is accurate.

I would like for the extender to work with my entire Canon lens collection, but I was aware than it would not bfore the purchase.

    Comments about Canon 1.4x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):

    After purchasing the Canon 70-200 L USM 2.8 I was in love with the image quality but as my favourite subjects are nature and wildlife I wanted to get closer to the action.

    As I did not purchase the IS version I shoot mostly handheld at fast shutter speeds and did not want a extender that would degrade the quality I was so in love with.

    The 1.4 EF Extender did just what it says it would gave me a 340mm L quality lens with minimum degradation.

    Well I shoot with a 550D so the crop sensor gave me a bit more as well. So how happy am I.

    For the price of the 1.4 EF Extender I could not go past it. I dropped to f4 but most of my shot were there anyway and when I need it I have my f2.8 right at my finger tips.

    The second best purchase I have made so far. The next might be a 5D Mark II, so onwards and upwards.

    BTW this was the best price I could find on the web for a new one.
    Well done B&H, and thanks

          Comments about Canon 1.4x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):

          For a long time, I was thinking about 'extending' the range of my lenses. I have a 17-50 by Tamron, and a 70-200 by Canon. The 200 end is a little short for my needs, so I've been considering a 300mm lens, but the cost is too high. After trying my friend's tele extender, it became obvious that the tele-exetender is the way to go. And canon's extender is the best match for my canon's lens! It performs wonderfully, while keeping the image as sharp as it was without it!
          Highly recommended!

                  I picked this up just before my first trip to Yellowstone National Park, and I couldn't be happier! The 1.4 extender gave me the extra reach that helped to get some shots that I would not have been able to with out it. I used it with the 7D and the Canon 70-200 IS L 2.8. The auto focus worked perfectly and the 1.4 conversion made the 2.8 an f4 which was acceptable to me. This was a cost effective solution to get more reach and not spend $$$ to go to the 100-400 or something larger. I am very pleased with this product.

                    I use this with my 70-200. The Autofocus works great and it just goes up one stop on F-Stop to 4. I used it a lot before I got my EF 100-400mm 4-5.6L IS Lens that I keep on my 7D. The 70-200mm 2.8L IS is a great lens. One of the best I think. Stays on my 50D. A EF 100mm 2.8 USM on my 40D and EF 24-70mm 2.8L USM on my 1Ds. The 70-200 is my favorite. If I need more distance, the 1.4x II Extender comes out. It makes little difference in lighted situations and really in low light too. I would recommend it for the 70-200mm 2.8L lens to anyone. Great addition to the camera bag.

                    I basically use the extender for high school outdoor sports. Because of the distances your forced to shoot from, it's a great addition to my 70-200mm 2.8 It gives you more reach and is far less expensive then the f/4 300m L series lens. Also great for indoors during basketball season but external strobes is a must. The only dislike is the fact that you lose 2 f stops which is why the strobes are necessary in doors. Other than that It's an additional piece of equipment every outdoor sports photographer should own!

                    Comments about Canon 1.4x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):

                    I just returned from a South African safari where I put the 1.4 to use. As most reviews stated, I did not get the sharpness that I would have liked to get, especially at 400mm on my Canon 40D with my Canon EF 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 L IS Ultra Sonic Lens.
                    For the most part on Safari is used the camera hand held at wide aperture, f4.5 - 5.6 in low light at higher ISO because the light was low during the AM and PM drives.

                    I could not afford the Canon 500 or 600mm lens with the wider apertures so I tried the extender. It performed well in bight light and was not quite so effective in the low light situations listed above. I used the converter to view game more so than shoot it.

                    I ultimately took most pictures without the adapter and waited until I got close enough to the animals to fill the frame with the 100-400 lens.

                      Comments about Canon 1.4x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):

                      I use it with 100-400 Canon lens, wanted to buy when realized that for some distant objects 400 is not enough. Good tripod recommended with this combination.
                      No autofocus, but for wildlife photos (when you shoot still objects) autofocus sometimes does not help too much, so lack of this function is neither "+" or "-". Also do not think autofocus will help much with moving objects (birds) on such focal length.
                      Just returned from Alaska trip when I started to use this extender.

                        Comments about Canon 1.4x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):

                        After extensive testing on my 400 mm telephoto lens, I've decided that the 1.4x expander (II) is no better than cropping the image without the extender. I did these tests under varied conditions with an AF bar chart. A big downside is that the AF doesn't any longer work with the 400 mm lens. Possibly the newer III extender is better, but I chose not to spend the [$] additional. Perhaps I should have.

                        Use it with my 70-200 mm lens and the 400 mm lens.
                        It gives you more reach but you loose a stop.
                        Manageable if you are shooting indoors, fine outdoors.

                          I was amazed that it did not degrade the image quality on my 500 mm f/4 lens. It is very helpful for the bird photography that I do. Can't say anything bad about this teleconverter.
