Works as expected

Comments about Alesis HD24 24 Track HD Recorder:

I wanted this for remote recording since my PC setup, although stable, is not very portable. It sounds accurate. I haven't heard anything funny in the recordings, but don't expect to be blown away by the sound(I wasn't expecting that anyway).

The one thing that I was a bit disappointed with was the fan noise from the unit. I had expected it to be significantly quieter than my PC setup but is only marginally quieter than the PC. The older ADAT XT units are quieter as far as externally generated noise while recording. The sound of this unit is better than the ADAT XT...no doubt about that.

Overall I have to say good bang for the buck.

Comments about Alesis HD24 24 Track HD Recorder:

I use this for tracking - both live and in the studio. Right, there is no hardcore editing, but if you are into recording music that is actually played by human beings, than you will be fine with this unit. Get a footswitch for punches.
I've owned mine for nearly a year and it is rock solid. Sometimes you have to push the drives in a little harder than you think to get them to be recognized.
The sound quality is very good. The XR is said to sound much better, but I am more than content with the sound of this HD24. I don't believe that having the XR would make people enjoy my recordings anymore than they already do.
My only complaint is the fan noise. I've replaced my HD24's fan with a high performance 'silent' computer fan and all is well.
Forget about buying the fireport. Google 'HD24tools' and read everything you can on the HD24tools site.

Comments about Alesis HD24 24 Track HD Recorder:

I picked the HD24 up for live recording and it performs flawlessly. It's built nicely and feels quality all the way around. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars are:

    1. No Headphone output for checking line levels at a show. A solo button on each channel routed to a headphone output would be perfect. Instead you must bring a headphone amp along and physically plug the amp into each output to hear what the source sounds like... sort of a pain.

    2. While it says it supports drives up to 2TB in theory, it doesn't like drives much bigger than 160GB. I bought a 320GB drive for it and it only mounts once it a blue moon. But an 80GB drive records 6+ hours, which is longer than any live show I will ever attend. This is a known problem in the HD24 world and looks like Alesis is not interested in fixing it, so buy smaller drives.

    3. To import tracks into Pro Tools or any other DAW, the FIreport (optional) is a must buy item. Transferring hours worth of live music using the built in ethernet port would take forever. The FST connect software that comes with the Fireport isn't well supported by Alesis and at the moment 10.4.11 and a couple early versions of Leopard (10.5.2) are the only newer versions of OSX that work. Luckily I have a Mac Book sitting around with 10.4.11, otherwise I would have been in a bind.

    4. EIDE (PATA) drives are starting to get phased out by hard drive manufacturers and replaced by SATA. Cross you fingers that Alesis or some third party creates a SATA tray someday...

WIth all those things said, it is a great machine, and I would suggest it to anyone as a great live recording rig. If you want something for a home studio, look into a nice Mac and a Digi 003 instead because this machine isn't very flexible as far as editing goes. I just hope Alesis cares enough about keeping the product up to date and on the market. Since Numark bought Alesis things have been a bit shaky. This is a great product!
