Hoya Cross Screen filters have a surface that is etched with a fine grid pattern. Depending on the pattern, point light sources and reflections create multi-beam stars.
Hoya's Star 4 Cross Screen is designed so that a 4-point star is created from point light sources and reflections.

Comments about Hoya 77mm 4x Cross Screen Star Effect Glass Filter:
Star filters are such a fun way to add a little bit of pizazz to "usual" photos. I used a set of these in the ship port in Puerta Vallarta at night. Superb!

Comments about Hoya 77mm 4x Cross Screen Star Effect Glass Filter:
It's always better to do things the correct way in the first place. Some of you might say, I can just add the effect in Photo shop. Well, you certainly can. But you can also change the exposure in Photo shop, and it just doesn't turn out the same way as if you would have changed the exposure on the camera at the time that you took your picture. Like I said, this is a great product, but not to be over-used.
You can adjust the direction of the rays of light by how you turn the filter on your lens (which is nice). The problem with that is when you turn it, it is no longer fully attached to your lens (I don't care about that, but I know some people would, so just FYI).
Good price and build quality for how often it will be used. No complaints, nor regrets!

This filter does what it is suppose to do in an impressive manner. I only had difficulty detaching the filter because the thread ring is very slim for a firm hold. I suggest the aid of a flat rubber band along the thread ring for easy turning or a filter wrench.

Comments about Hoya 77mm 4x Cross Screen Star Effect Glass Filter:
I purchased this filter to shoot Christmas lights/candles but can be used when you have any point light source(s) in your image, i.e. specular reflections off of water. It also softens the image somewhat which may be useful for portraiture. It is a "special effects" filter that I won't use often but it can add an interesting effect to make the image different. It's nice to have in the bag.
Shooting into bright light reduces contrast. The best star effect occurs when the light source is against a darker background. You rotate the filter to obtain the star orientation that is most pleasing for your image.

I like the 4-star filter. Have a couple 8's and they are a bit much, 4 looks natural.

This filter worked a lot better than I thought it would. Purchased it to create a star effect during weddings. Really love it! Great buy for the price!
