This filter is used for photography with infrared films. Infrared film is also sensitive to ultraviolet rays and the shorter wavelengths of the visible spectrum so it is necessary to filter out all but the infrared rays. Hoya makes two types of infrared filters: R72 passes only infrared rays above 720nm; RM90 passes only that above 900nm.

Comments about Hoya 55mm R72 Infrared Glass Filter:

This filter works out very well for me and produces great images through my minolta 5d when white balance is set for night and shooting in RAW. My camera is not a dedicated infrared camera, however when I did the remote test it picks up a very good amount of infrared light. Construction and quality are classic Hoya. Don't even think about getting one of the cheap infrared filters when this one is really not that much more. If you are going to be using this filter with a digital camera, I highly recommend doing the remote test first. Grab your favorite TV remote, head to a room with preferably no windows, put your camera in night landscape mode, make sure your camera is between iso 100-400, turn off the lights, push and hold a button on the remote and take a picture of the ir bulb (use a tripod and remote or timer as the exposure will be long). If you can see the bulb really well, your camera has good ir sensitivity. Buy this filter and have fun. If you can't see the bulb, don't waste your money as this filter will be all but useless. You can have your camera modified to take great ir shots, however that's all you can take afterwords.
