This filter is used for photography with infrared films. Infrared film is also sensitive to ultraviolet rays and the shorter wavelengths of the visible spectrum so it is necessary to filter out all but the infrared rays. Hoya makes two types of infrared filters: R72 passes only infrared rays above 720nm; RM90 passes only that above 900nm.

Works great! I did a lot of research on this product prior to ordering. I am shooting infrared images on a Sigma SD-10 digital SLR with the IR cutoff filter removed. I use this to cut the visible light and pass on IR to the sensor.

Great filter. Especially if you are new to IR and just starting out. Works great on my Olympus E520 and E620. When using the Live View w/Boost I have no problems seeing/focusing or metering.

Comments about Hoya 58mm RM72 Infrared Glass Filter:

The RM72 is a pro quality optical filter that passes only the deepest reds and the infrared spectrum peaking at 850 nanometers. Experience has shown me that my DLSR, even with its internal IR blocking filter, still passes enough infrared spectrum to create striking, high quality IR images with this filter. However, if your camera's interneal blocking filter stays in place expect up to 30 second exposures in bright sun at 100 ASA. This filter is a professional quality accessory.

Comments about Hoya 58mm RM72 Infrared Glass Filter:

This filter is a great way to get started with infrared photography. It's easy to use on an unmodified DSLR and provides excellent results.

The only drawback is long exposure times when low ISO settings are used. I have to increase the shutter speed 11 EVs on my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. At an ISO setting of 100 this results in 2 minute exposure times. But it is well worth the wait.

Comments about Hoya 58mm RM72 Infrared Glass Filter:

I got great results with this filter and Efke infrared film. The #25 red filter that usually does well with IR did not produce as good of results with the Efke film than this filter. This is the cheapest infrared filter I have seen. It is opaque, so compose before putting on the filter. It will be a pain to constantly take it on and off, but the results will be quite good.

Comments about Hoya 58mm RM72 Infrared Glass Filter:

Wedded to my Canon Powershot G9, the Hoya RM72 59mm filter produces truly real infrared pictures. The union of the 58mm filter, the Canon adaptor, and the G9 camera produces images that look like real infrared developed film, and the G9 does this without the "hot spot" in the center of the image like some other digital camera/lens combinations. The filter requires the Canon lens adaptor, LA-DC58H Lens Adapter (or deneric equivalent), which is threaded to 58mm filter and designed to fit over its extending lense. To see examples of this camera's pictures, bth alone and in combination with the Hoya R72, [@]. With infrared, you definitely see things in a different light. Highly recommended!-Steve Burt
