The Hoya 58mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Super Multi-Coated (S-HMC) Glass Haze Filter is a wise initial investment. It helps protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.
Hoya's high transmission Super-Multi-Coating minimizes reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting.
This outstanding filter offers revolutionary performance in light transmission and color balance. 12 layers of Super Multicoating are applied to the surfaces of the Skylight 1B and UV(0) models, which produces an average transmission of 99.7%.
Coupled with maximum surface precision, this allows increased resistance to flare and stunning images can be recorded at wide apertures without compromising the performance of your lenses.

I've used this with the 18-55mm/f3.5-5.6 kit Canon kit lens on a Canon Rebel XS (1000D). I had previously used a cheap filter, which I believed was uncoated, and it would exhibit lens flare (read this primer if you don't know what that is [@]). Since using this filter, I have not experienced any flare. The filter also keeps my lens protected. When I first started photography, I'd be paranoid about re-capping my lens after taking a set of pictures because I was worried about dirt collecting on the lens. But with a filter on, I just keep the cap off whenever I know I'll be shooting for an extended period of time.I was also considering purchasing Hoya's 58mm HMC filter (it doesn't have the "super" description). I've read on forums that it does a comparable job to the S-HMC, but I have not tested this.

Gives you sharp/clear images...I bought a Canon T3i with the 18-55mm lens. I knew that my pictures would only be so good with the kit lens but I was very disappointed with my image quality from a 18 mega pixel camera. One day I took off the Tiffen UV filter and shot with no UV filter and I saw a real difference. So after a lot of research I decided on this filter because of the 12 layers of coating and I have so say the photos are even better then the lens with no filter. I very happy I spent the extra money on this filter.

Clear sharp photos at last..I bought a Canon T3i and I was talked into a Tiffen UV filter. I was very unhappy with the image quality of a 18 megapixel camera. I knew I have only a kit lens but I still expected better quality, until I took off the filter. I bought this filter after a lot of research on the internet but I still was unsure if a filter would improve my image quality, I'm happy to say it improved my image quality and I'm very happy I spent the extra money for a better filter.

This is a good quality filter. Its very clear and has few reflections. I accidentally managed to put its toughness to the test, by running my camera lens first into a doorknob. It left a small ding...but it didn't shatter like a cheap filter probably would have.

I purchased this filter for lens protection and what can I say, not much to this filter. Just a very high transmission UV filter, great clarity and well worth the small price to protect my lens from the elements.
Took this down to the beach for a few shots, 10 minutes and the filter had a good coat of sea spray, cleaned up well and gave me a warm fuzzy feeling that nothing touched the glass.

First thing I bought was this filter when buying a new 50mm lens. I always have used UV filters on my lenses for protection. Doesn't cause any issues with my Nikon D700/50mm 1.4G lens. Does the job!

I'm an amateur photographer and have briefly used the filter listed but it's provided great results so far! I haven't had a single hazy exposure since I snapped it on. I highly recommend it!

Good lens protection from spray, spit, sneezes, blowing dust, fingerprints, and other environmental hazards. Less flare and ghosting than competing brands, including B+W MRC. Cleans well with breath and micro-fiber cloth. No discernible effect on sharpness or autofocus accuracy.

Comments about Hoya 58mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Super Multi-Coated (S-HMC) Glass Haze Filter:
I bought this lens to hopefully cut down on the reflections while shooting with my CANON 60D.
Originally I used the basic Canon UV lens. (It was the cheapest filter, it's not coated. And I bought it solely to protect my lens.) However, it did cause a lot of reflections. Which apparently DSLRs are known for anyways.
I since bought this Hoya filter and it did cut down on the Reflections by about half!!!
Then I was curious... so I took the filter of my lens and just shot with lens itself.
I pointed the camera at some christmas lights... and still saw reflections anyways. (Because of the glass in my lens itself)
This Hoya filter DID increase the reflections vs. having no filter attached to the lens. But not by much. And I need something to protect my lens :)
This Hoya filter did much better then the basic Canon filter... as far as reflections go!
Hope this helps

I don't have the money to buy pricier filters, but I've purchased and compared a 72mm Hoya against a 72mm B+W in the same price range. Bottom line is that when I needed a 58mm I got another Hoya S-HMC. Mild reflections can still crop up (which is why the 4 stars--I'd give a 4.5 if I could), but they're minimal and rare.

Super multi-coating reduces reflections that can ruin night time photographs, and lets through slightly more light. Stay away from cheap uncoated filters!
